Shane Mosley on Canelo, critics, staying busy and fighting Martinez

‘Sugar’ Shane aiming to reclaim WBC title

Three-weight world champion Shane Mosley is ready to prove he can still mix it with the young champions at the age of 40, when the Californian squares up to WBC light-middleweight title holder Saul Alvarez in Las Vegas next month.

The former undisputed 154lb champion, who is without a victory since January 2009, will attempt to become the first fighter to defeat 'Canelo' in 40 contests at the MGM Grand on Cinco de Mayo and knows another loss could leave him with nowhere left to go after almost 20 years in professional boxing.

“I feel confident that I will prove the critics wrong,” Mosley told World Boxing News.

“My son, Shane, Jr., is the same age as Alvarez, but I'll be the teacher in this fight.”

Some parts of the press have been quick to dismiss the experienced Mosley’s chances against the strong champion, although Mosley says it just gives him added motivation to claim another world belt.

“It only gives me more reason to train harder. I can still fight and want to prove it,” he said.

‘Sugar’ Shane also plans to fight again before the end of 2012 following just three bouts in over three years and has not ruled out moving up to middleweight to face Sergio Martinez before he hangs up his gloves for good.

“I always like to be in the gym so yes, it natural for me to keep busy,” explained Mosley.

“You know, 160 pounds is a little big for me but I'll never say never. Sergio is a very good fighter. It would be an entertaining fight but I can only focus on Canelo now.

“I've done well financially so I expect to live very comfortably whatever happens and live a good healthy life when I retire,” he added.

Alvarez, 21, has been linked to a huge unification with the winner of Floyd Mayweather v Miguel Cotto, which tops the bill on the night and Mosley will attempt to scupper those plans and put himself in the frame for the two-belt match-up.

Jay WBN Editor ‘Suavecito’ scores 20th straight win over Shimoda Undefeated Californian Rico Ramos produced a world-class left hand in the seventh round of his WBA title challenge against Japan’s Akifumi Shimoda to rip the belt away from the older southpaw in his first defence. The 24 year-old looked far from a world champion in the first five rounds, only gaining a foothold in the fight in round six, but ultimately produced the equalizer in the seventh to take the crown.
