IBO title retained on points in South Africa

Chris Van Heerden made a successful first defence of his IBO welterweight title, following on from his career-best victory over Kaizer Mabuza with a near shut-out points win over Sebastian Lujan.

The 24 year-old, who had lost just once since turning pro in 2006 prior to tonight’s showing, is now 18-1-1 with a dominant display against the Argentine veteran and was never troubled throughout the fight.

Lujan, 32, used spoiling tactics to try and gain a foothold in the fight, although Van Heerden’s youth and exuberance put paid to any of the four-time world title challenger’s advances and he now drops to 39-7-2.
