Ricky Hatton loses boxing license

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Former Light-Welterweight Champ faces another blow Things seem to get worse for Britain’s former two-time world champion Ricky Hatton after the British Boxing Board of Control revoked his license to box. After a sustained period of inactivity and amidst public revelations about the Hitman’s private affairs, it has been decided that the decision would be best for all parties. A BBBofC statement today read: "Mr Ricky Hatton MBE was legally represented at a hearing held by the stewards of the British Boxing Board of Control on Wednesday 22 September 2010 to answer charges of bringing boxing into disrepute which had been reported widely across the media. "At the hearing, the board found Ricky Hatton guilty of misconduct in that his actions and behaviour were detrimental to the interests of boxing and to the public interest and that he had brought the sport into disrepute. "Ricky Hatton is not an active boxer and his current physical con

Mora sees Mosley as a step to greatness

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Former Contender Champion wants to earn legacy Former WBC Light-Middleweight Champion Sergio Mora is confident that adding a win over the four-time world champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley on Saturday can catapult him amongst the worlds pound for pound best. “The Latin Snake” sees the 39 year-old Mosley as “a legend” and wants to show the world that he also has what it takes to mix it with the worlds elite. 29 year-old Mora came to the public’s attention in 2005 by winning NBC’s boxing tournament “The Contender” and has since gone on to lift the WBC Title by beating Vernon Forrest in 2008. Mora lost the title in the rematch three months later but after 18 months out of the ring knocked out Calvin Green in seven rounds in April to set up the chance against Mosley. Mosley has had mixed fortunes himself lately, losing two of his last five fights, the latest one against Floyd Mayweather in May, but is still confident he has a few more years left at the

Khan and Maidana sign for December showdown

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor WBA Champ to defend against dangerous Argentine World Light-Welterweight Champion Amir Khan will make the third defence of his Title against 29-1-0 Marcos Maidana at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on December 11th. Khan 23, has knocked out both opponents in his two previous defences against Paulie Malinaggi and Dmitriy Salita since winning the belt against Andriy Kotelnik in July 2009. Khan made the announcement via his Twitter account stating “All the legality work for my next fight is done and signed by both parties” 27 year-old Maidana has 27 knockouts on his record and should be Khan’s toughest test to date after earning the shot by beating former world champion DeMarcus Corley in August. With Khan having 17 knockouts from his 23 contests, it should be an explosive fight as both men have also been on the floor more than once in their careers so far.

Ricky stuns Rocky to claim WBO Title

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Burns wins world featherweight title in shock win Scotland’s Ricky Burns inflicted Puerto Rican Roman “Rocky Martinez’s first defeat to claim the WBO Featherweight Title at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow on Saturday Night. Burns improves to 29-2-0 after controlling most of the fight, despite being down in the first, Ricky landed almost twice as many punches at the previously unbeaten champion to claim a unanimous decision. Martinez (24-1-0) seemed to lose his game plan after the first round knock down and just threw wild punches in the hope of getting the fight stopped early and taking the title back to Puerto Rico. Ricky had the home crowd in rapture’s by almost knocking Martinez down for the first time in his career on more than one occasion and had to cover up himself a few times after a couple of power punches from the former champ. The three judges at ringside scored the contest 115-112, 115-112, 115-113 to make Ricky Burns the WBO Featherweight

Sithsamerchai keeps title after draw

Sithsamerchai: Keeps title WBC Minimumweight Title fight ends in stalemate Oleydong Sithsamerchai kept hold of his WBC Minimumweight Title by scoring a majority draw with challenger Pornsawan Porpramook in Thailand. Sithsamerthai dominated the early rounds with the challenger coming back midway through the fight, knocking the champion down in the sixth with a vicious combination to the body. Porpramook seemed to run out of steam after round nine though and allowed the champion back into the fight in the later rounds, with the judges scoring the contest 114-114, 114-114 and 114-113 for the champion. With two of the judges scoring the contest a draw it meant Sithsamerchai kept hold of his title but the possibility of a rematch looms large.

Katsidis gets his Marquez Shot

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Aussie Lightweight takes on Mexican legend Interim WBO Lightweight Champion Michael Katsidis will get his shot at Juan Manuel Marquez after all as the Mexican WBA and WBO Champ decided against moving up to light-welterweight to challenge Amir Khan. Marquez 37, had been hoping to take on Britain’s WBA Light-Welterweight Champion Khan sometime in December as he planned his way to a fourth world title at a fourth different weight, but has now announced he will stay at lightweight till at least 2011. Khan 23, is now due to take on Marcos Maidana on Decmeber 11th after the Argentinian outclassed DeMarcus Corley last Saturday night to win the Interim version of the WBA Light-Welterweight Champion’s belt. It’s a welcome announcement for Katsidis 30, who had been hoping to win the WBO Title rather than be handed the belt if Marquez moved up and after his three round demolition of Kevin Mitchell in May, the Aussie will be in confident mood. Marquez co

Maidana to get Khan or the title

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Interim WBA champ “El Chino” hoping for UK bout After his victory over DeMarcus Corley on Saturday night in Argentina, Interim WBA Light-Welterweight Champion Marcos Maidana is now seeking out a December fight with Great Britain’s WBA holder Amir Khan. If the match isn’t made then Maidana (29-1-0) will automatically become the WBA Champion, but with a date lined up for the 11th of the month, the bout looks to be virtually set with both fighters close to agreement. Maidana 27, showed he will be no pushover for the younger champion after out-pointing former WBC Champion DeMarcus Corley on Saturday night to set up the chance to challenge the former Olympic Silver Medallist. “King” Khan 23, had been hoping for a unification bout with WBO Light-Welterweight Title holder Timothy Bradley or WBC and IBF Champ Devon Alexander but it now seems that those plans will have to be put on hold until 2011. Both fighters have superb knockout records with Maidana
