Jay  WBN Editor WBC flyweight king ends career on low Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, who earlier this year was acclaimed as the ‘WBC Fighter of the Decade’ has been forced to hang up his gloves after a devastating third round loss to unknown Rey Migreno. The 35 year-old, who made 21 successful WBC flyweight title defences in two spell as champion, cut a forlorn figure as Migreno celebrated his victory and condemned him to his second stoppage defeat of the year. Wonjongkam had handpicked his opponents since his loss to Sonny Boy Jaro earlier this year and went into the bout in his hometown confident on a four-fight winning streak. The Thai fighters demeanour meant nothing though as his body seemed to fail him in the fight and afterwards he admitted that the decision to extend his career lied with his manager Wirat Wachirarattanawong. Jay  WBN Editor Thai legend facing career end Former WBC flyweight belt hoarder Pongsaklek Wonjongkam has suffered a second stoppage loss of the year and may now be staring into the abyss of his boxing career with an unthinkable loss to Rey Migreno. The 35 year-old, who has 87 wins from 94 contests, had made 21 successful defences of the WBC 112lb title in two spells, before losing it to 10-loss Sonny Boy Jaro in March and after building up his confidence with four straights wins, has now fallen again. Filipino Migreno, 26, has 18 victories from his 41 bouts, losing 20 times in his seven-year career and has already been beaten twice by Wonjongkam, the last of which was a first round knockout in July 2010. Migreno has now gone shooting up the WBC rankings after claiming the WBC International title by stopping the southpaw in three rounds as a shocked crowd looked on in Wonjongkam’s home city at the Central Pavilion in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Jay  WBN Editor Thai legend halted in the sixth by Sonny Boy WBN Pound for pound number four ranked Pongsaklek Wonjongkam suffered only his second loss in sixteen years when Filipino Sonny Boy Jaro stopped the WBC flyweight belt holder in Chonburi, Thaliand. The 34 year-old seemed to have aged almost overnight as he never got in the fight and was put down in the first, third and sixth rounds before the referee called a halt to the bout with Wonjongkam in no position to continue. Rizal-based Jaro, 29, who had ten losses on his record in 48 bouts going into the fight, went into the bout an overwhelming underdog but is now a world champion for the first time after two failed attempts previously.

Jay WBN Editor Kogawa to move down to 112lbs for challenge WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam will make yet another defence of his 112lb belt when he meets Japan’s Takuya Kogawa on July 1st in his home country of Thailand. The 33 year-old has held the title on two occasions, first winning the title in 2001 and going on to make 17 successful defences. The Thai legend then reclaimed the title in 2010, winning a majority decision over the strongly fancied champion Koki Kameda and earning his place amongst the top fighters in the world. Wonjongkam has an impressive 80-3-1 record with 44 KO’s, although a lot of the bouts are against young fighters over four rounds inbetween title defences and he now takes on Kogawa, who is 17-1. Kogawa, 26, has been campaigning at super-flyweight since turning pro in 2005, but couldn’t turn down the opportunity to fight for a world title and agreed to challenge the veteran champion at 112lbs. Thai legend gets win number 77 Pongsakek Wonjongkam made the 20th successful defence of his WBC Flyweight Title against fellow Thai Suriyan Por Chokchai in a close unanimous decision earlier today. The 33 year-old first won the title in 2001 and held it for six years making 19 defences before losing it to Daisuke Naito on points and also drawing a rematch with the Japanese fighter eight months later. In March this year, Wonjongkam travelled to Tokyo and regained the title with a majority points win over another Japanese flyweight, the unbeaten Koki Kameda. It was a close affair against ChokChai with Wonjongkam just edging it as the judges scored the bout 115-114, 114-113, 115-112 improving his recored to 77-3-1 with 40 KO’s.
