‘Italian Sensation’ ready for title shot in 2013

Undefeated welterweight Phil Lo Greco is hoping to secure a WBC title eliminator in the coming months - with former world title challenger Josesito Lopez firmly in his sights.

The 28 year-old, who has amassed an impressive 14 stoppages from 25 wins, was unexpectedly knocked down in the first round of his latest bout with Daniel Sostre, but feels ready to take on higher opposition after previously admitting a lack of motivation.

Lo Greco is now looking for the WBC to sanction him as a potential future opponent for current champion Floyd Mayweather and has told WBN of his intent to fight his way to a mandatory position to be granted his first world title shot.

“My manager Christian Cherchi is trying to get me the fight with Josesito Lopez,” Lo Greco told World Boxing News. “I hope it can be done in March and maybe it can be a WBC eliminator since we are both in the top 15 in the WBC.

“Over the next eight to nine months I want to fight for the world title and give fans thrilling fights - I'm game and this fight could be real fireworks if it happens because we both come to fight,” he added.

Potential opponent Lopez, also 28, is thought to be heading back down to 147lbs after losing a light-middleweight title bout to Saul Alvarez last September, prior to which he scored the best win of his career by halting ex-world champion Victor Ortiz.

The Californian made a massive jump from 140 to 154lbs in the space on just twelve months and it seems only natural that a run at welterweight would be the best option for Lopez, who may see a Lo Greco clash as a tempting return bout.

Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie gained a su
