Jose Sulaiman explains Andre Ward’s WBC title status to WBN

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Picture by Alex Caurezma/Goossen 168lb belt vacated to keep it active World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman has confirmed what Sakio Bika stated in a recent interview with WBN – that the WBC super-middleweight title is indeed vacant. Former world champion Bika, 33, told WBN that he will fight for the full title next month, at the same time that reports indicated that he was fight Nikola Sjekloca for the interim version on February 16 at the Boardwalk Hall. Sulaiman has now rubberstamped the fact that Andre Ward has been relieved of his title as he recovers from shoulder surgery, but did reinforce that the American will fight for the 168lb belt upon his return to the ring. “Due to the unfortunate fracture of Andre Ward and the long time that he would be put in recovery the WBC has voted in favour of naming him as the WBC Emeritus Champion,” Sulaiman told World Boxing News. “This is so the rule is followed for not having frozen titles ...

Olusegun refusing to step aside for Khan: Garcia WBC purse bid on Friday

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Mandatory challenger adamant he gets his shot The WBC’s number one light-welterweight contender Ajose Olusegun has revealed to World Boxing News that a purse bid is to be held on Friday for his ordered world title shot against champion Danny Garcia. The 32 year-old, who defeated Ali Chebah in September to make himself the mandatory WBC challenger, has been patiently awaiting the nod from the World Boxing Council and is hoping that all will be settled by the end of the week. “I am getting nearer to getting the shot at the title because the WBC has ordered a purse bid for the fight which is to be held in Mexico city this Friday - so in that aspect, yes I'm closer to my goal of becoming world champion,” Olusegun told World Boxing News. Reports that newly-crowned champion Danny Garcia could be ready for a potential three-belt unification with Amir Khan have angered the 30-0 contender and Olusegun has no intention of allowing the bout to go ahead. ...

After the WBC “Diamond” belt, the “Platinum” belt can’t be far away

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Fans pleas go unheard as organisations add more titles With 90% of the fans, boxers and promoters that I speak to wanting just one world title for every weight division, the creation of the WBC “Diamond” belt, which Sergio Martinez and Bernard Hopkins have successfully claimed is another unwanted title to add to the majority of the rest. Although it is just a one-off belt that the winner gets to keep, it is an unwelcome manufactured belt that just confuses fans and even some commentators, who don't know which title is real and which title is to be defended. Add that to the WBC's original “Gold” belt and the "Silver" belt, along with the WBA’s new “super” title and “regular” titles, then we are looking at six or seven world champions in each division, which is not doing the fight game any favours in terms of credibility. You ask anyone in boxing what they would like to change about boxing and nine out of ten would say “less titles” ...
