Jay WBN Editor “Junito” ignores Nicaraguan goading to retain title WBA “Super” light-middleweight champion Miguel Angel Cotto successfully defended his title for the first time, after challenger Ricardo Mayorga pulled out of the contest at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in the last round citing a thumb injury. The 30 year-old champion stuck to his gameplan of jabbing and moving throughout the fight, as Mayorga tried to goad him into standing and trading. The Puerto Rican showed how he has matured into an experienced champion, by ignoring his opponent’s antics and producing the more quality work. The end came in the final round; Cotto unleashed a three-punch combination, culminating in a big left hook, which sent the challenger down. He just beat the count, before Cotto moved in again and with Mayorga complaining of a sore thumb, the bout was called off. Jay WBN Editor Bundrage rules out defence against Briton IBF light-middleweight champion Cornelius “K9” Bundrage has told WBN that he isn’t interested in defending his title at the moment and would much rather consider a unification bout with one of the three other 154lb champions in his division. The 37 year-old was linked to a defence against top 10 ranked Ryan Rhodes from Sheffield in the UK, but has denied considering the bout and scoffed at a meeting with the former European champion in the future. “I haven't been in any discussions with anyone from his team, regarding a fight, nor was I offered any money to fight Rhodes oversees or anywhere else,” Bundrage explained to WBN. With the WBC version of the light-middleweight title, formerly held by WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquaio currently vacant, that would still leave three options for the former Contender US semi-finalist, two of which have scheduled bouts in the near future. Jay WBN Editor Light-middleweight champion to choose opponent soon WBA 154lb champion Miguel Cotto will return to action at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on March 12th and will decide his opponent in the near future, with three possible candidates on his shortlist to choose from. Cotto, 30, could face unbeaten Armenian Vanes “Nightmare” Martirosyan, Poland’s Pawel Wolak or three-time world champion Ricardo Mayorga of Nicaragua on the same night Sergio Martinez defends his WBC middleweight title at Madison Square Garden. The three men face an anxious wait to find out their fate as Cotto makes his first appearance since his proposed bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr collapsed last month, leading to the Puerto Rican putting his fight date back to March next year. 24 year-old Vanes Martirosyan is the hot favourite to face Cotto and holds an outstanding record of 28 fights 17 knockouts and no defeats.
