Rees v Broner in Atlantic City

While Atlantic City may not possess the worldwide reputation for gambling fun that Vegas does, it’s still a top tourist resort for those on the east coast of the States – and February 16 looks set to attract a fair few more punters eager to see the rising star of US boxing. Adrien Broner has been hailed by many as the new Floyd Mayweather; he’s the current and undefeated WBC lightweight champion of the world and has won 21 of his 25 matches by knockout. His next opponent, Welshman Gavin Rees, is nine years Broner’s senior – but in the best shape of his life; perhaps the experience will give the challenger an edge found lacking in Broner’s most recent opponents. Having dropped his world light-welterweight championship at the first time of asking in 2009, Rees really came to the attention of the international boxing community when he became the first ever former world champion to enter Sky Sports’ Prizefighter competition. He took the plaudits by defeating three former European champi...

Gavin Rees agrees terms to face Adrien Broner

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Picture by Greig Bertram Promoter Hearn strikes title deal for Welshman in February Former light-welterweight world champion Gavin Rees is set to challenge WBC lightweight title holder Adrien Broner on February 16 in Atlantic City after promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed the news earlier today. Initial terms for a bout between the two have been agreed, according to Hearn - with an exchange of contracts seemingly the final hurdle to sealing the Welshman’s first trip to the United States next year. The 32 year-old had been rumoured to be in line to fight for the vacant WBA title over the past few months, but Hearn stepped up his efforts to find an alternative route once Richard Abril and Sharif Bogere were preferred. Rees will now attempt to become the first fighter to defeat formidable two-weight world champion Broner, 23, as the American has put together a tremendous run of 21 stoppages in 25 victories since turning professional. ‘The ...

Adrien Broner receives huge invoice to face Ricky Burns

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Price named for Scot to meet American in unification WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns is expecting a huge pay packet of £400,000 ($650,000) to put his belt on the line against WBC belt holder Adrien Broner in the US next April, says manager Alex Morrison. The two-weight world title-holder was called out by the confident American a few days ago to fight in February, which Broner then repeated live on Sky Sports to UK viewers on Saturday night in LA, as he wants to be recognised as the best in the world at 135lbs with a victory over Burns. Coatbridge-based Burns, 29, was left frustrated as a scheduled title defence fell apart over the weekend and now wants an interim bout before negotiations with Broner can begin in February, according to Morrison. “I spoke to Ricky this morning and we decided he will not be fighting Adrian Broner in February,” Morrison told STV . “Ricky didn’t want to jump from a non-event to the biggest fight of his l...

Schaefer on Broner’s next move, Floyd comparisons

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Golden Boy CEO praises ‘The Problem’ Richard Schaefer has laid praise on fledgling lightweight star Adrien Broner in the wake of the former WBO super-featherweight champion embarking on conquering his second weight-class in the coming months. The 22 year-old, who is undefeated in 24 contests, dominated Vicente Escobedo at the weekend to score his 20th career knockout and is now ready to seek out another world belt at the 135lb limit. Many are touting the youngster as the next pound for pound star of boxing with his defensive style, which mimics that of current box office king Floyd Mayweather, and Schaefer sees Broner as potentially one of the pay-per-view stars of the future. “Broner is an emerging superstar,” Schaefer told World Boxing News. “He talks the talk and walks the walk. He is without doubt one of the best talents we have seen in boxing for a long time and one of the most charismatic fighters. “He evokes emotions in pe...

Mayweather clone Broner crushes Escobedo

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘The Problem’ moves to 24-0 Former WBO super-featherweight champion Adrien Broner signed off from the 130lb division with an easy stoppage win over an out-of-depth and weight disadvantaged Vicente Escobedo in Cincinnati. The 22 year-old, who lost his title on the scales this past Friday, looked visibly bigger than the Woodland fighter in the ring and used all his extra strength to grind down Escobedo, forcing his corner to step in. Broner, using Floyd Mayweather’s successful defensive style, began the fight slowly before eventually scoring success from the fourth round and busted up Escobedo with regularity until the towel was raised to halt the fight at the end of the fifth. Escobedo had no answer to the power of Broner’s shots and ‘The Problem’ is now certain to be in line for a shot at one of the world champions at lightweight after declaring his intention to move up last week. The fight almost never took place as Escobedo, 30, pr...

Adrien Broner v Vincente Escobedo cancelled

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Former champion overweight at second weigh-in Adrien Broner’s final fight at the 130lb limit will not go ahead tonight as the former WBO super-featherweight champion once again came in overweight for his bout against Vicente Escobedo. The 22 year-old, who lost his title on the scales at yesterday’s weigh-in after coming in 3.5lbs over, was given a mark of 140lbs for today’s second weight check and came in at 143lbs leading to the bout being scrapped altogether. Escobedo, 30, is set to be handed a shot at the vacant belt in the coming months, whilst ‘The Problem’ will now move up to the lightweight division as originally planned before the clash at the U.S Bank Arena.

Broner: Burns knew moving up was best, he couldn’t beat me at my worst

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘The Problem’ ready for anyone in November world title bout WBO super-featherweight title challenger Adrien Broner is on the cusp of becoming world champion after an amazing start to his professional boxing career and is just awaiting an opponent for  his November date in Cincinnati, Ohio. The 22 year-old has racked up an impressive 21 victories in just over three years, with 17 knockouts, ten of which have come in the first round and the American believes that former champion Ricky Burns was right to vacate the title rather than risk it against him on home soil. “I'm not unhappy [at Burns’ moving up],” Broner told World Boxing News. “I feel like every man know what’s best for their career, so at the end of the day I'm happy for him because to be honest, he and I know he couldn't beat me on my worst day.” Another undefeated prospect Eloy Perez, 24, had initially been linked to opposing ‘The Problem’ in November but was ap...

Judah becomes a “super” champion

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Fourth world title for New Yorker Zab 33 year-old three-time world titleholder Zab “Super” Judah rolled back the years at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, with seventh round stoppage of South African Kaizer Mabuza to claim his fourth world championship and third at 140lbs. Judah (41-6), scored the 28 stoppage of his career to pick up the vacant IBF light-welterweight title after referee Samuel Viruet stepped in as barrage of punches from the southpaw followed a crushing left hand counter that dropped Mabuza and the fight was stopped 59 seconds into the seventh round. Mabuza, 31, showed he was no pushover in the earlier rounds of the contest, putting Judah down in the fourth with a right hand and rocking him in the sixth, but Judah used all of his world title experience to come through any hairy moments and came away victorious. Also on the Newark card, Adrien “The Problem” Broner edged a cagey ten round contest against former WBO...

Broner, 21, was fighting on home soil at the Taft Masonic Temple and had the 26 year-old in trouble in the first few seconds of the bout, staggering the Louisiana-born former middleweight with a left hook, before piling on the pressure to seal his ninth first round victory. In the process, Broner picked up his second professional title by claiming the WBC USNBC lightweight title and announced his intention to challenge for a world title later this year, before jetting off to spar with Devon Alexander ahead of his unification bout with Timothy Bradley.

Broner, who is still just 21, recorded the 15th knockout of his career. He has been ripping through his opponents, stopping his last nine and is now looking forward to getting back in the ring at the end of the month. “Well I feel great. I knew the guy was going to come to fight so I was well prepared,” Broner told WBN. “Now I have to go right back to the gym because I fight November 27th in Cincinnati (his hometown) were I will be main event, so I'm just trying to stay busy and next year I should be fighting for a world title, I know I am ready!” Broner’s opponent is yet to be named for the date in just over two weeks, but after recording his eighth first round knockout against Julio, he we be super-confident of recording yet an...
