Mayweather lines up Guerrero, then Alvarez for 2013

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor As reported by WBN in December, Robert Guerrero looks set to earn a shot at WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4th, beating Saul Alvarez for the privilege of challenging the greatest fighter of his generation. The 29 year-old has been slated to be the 44th foe to attempt to overthrow Mayweather in his sixteen-year career and could conceivably be formally announced next week. Rumours are now circulating that Saul Alvarez will be next in line for 'Money' once he makes a successful appearance as chief support. The card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is to be named ‘Cinco de Mayweather’ as it takes place on the same weekend as the Mexican holiday and will hold significance for both Guerrero and Jalisco-born Alvarez. The bout will be the first for Mayweather, 35, since his incarceration between June and August last year, with the touted second fight against 'Canelo' planned for September as the American looks to ce...

Guerrero ahead of Canelo in Mayweather race

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘The Ghost’ set to earn WBC title chance Although unconfirmed, Robert Guerrero looks set to earn a shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4th, beating light-middleweight king Saul Alvarez for the privilege of challenging the greatest fighter of his generation. The 29 year-old has been slated to be the 44th foe to attempt to overthrow Mayweather in his sixteen-year career by several sources, including statistics website Boxrec, and could conceivably be formally announced before the New Year. The card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is to be named ‘Cinco de Mayweather’ as it takes place on the same weekend as the Mexican holiday and will hold significance for Guerrero, who is of Latino descent. The bout will be the first for Mayweather, 35, since his incarceration between June and August this year, with a second fight planned for September as the American looks to cement his place as the pound for pound best. Guerrero: I'll take the Pacquiao v Marquez winner out!

In a battle that had Super Bowl like stakes on the line,   Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero  (31-1-1, 18 KOs) thoroughly dominated former two-time welterweight world champion  Andre Berto  (28-2, 22 KOs), over twelve grinding back and forth action-packed rounds, dropping him twice in the process.  The  slug-fest  has many commentators, fans and media, considering this war to be "Fight of the year". Guerrero, a four-time world champion over six weight classes, is the only Mexican-American fighter, other than future Hall of Famer and promoter  Oscar De La Hoya , to win as many titles in as many weight classes. After once campaigning at the Junior featherweight (122 pounds) weight class, "The Ghost" has now triumphed over six weight divisions, being the only active fighter other than Manny Pacquiao to compete and win in as many divisions. "My number one goal is to give the fans the fights they deserve and use my platform as a prizefigh...

Guerrero grinds out gruelling points win over Berto

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Ghost’ retains interim title in California Multi-weight world champion Robert Guerrero maybe one step closer to securing his dream bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. after retaining his interim WBC title against Andre Berto. The 29 year-old from Gilroy, had Berto in trouble from the off, dropping him with some hard rights hands as the challenger struggled with the ferocious pace in the early stages of the contest. More accurate punches put Berto down for a second time in the next round and left the former belt holder with a closing right eye that seemed to instantly trouble him as it blew up from a straight left. From round three onwards the fight was much more competitive as the two fighters slugged it out on the inside and neither of the two warriors would give any ground for the remaining rounds. Guerrero’s early knockdowns had made the result look more one-sided than it actually was as all three judges agreed with my card of 116-...

Robert Guerrero pleased with Ricky Hatton's return

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Ghost’ coy on talk of possible match-up In a recent interview with WBN, interim WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero kept his cards close to his chest when asked about a possible future world title bout with the returning Ricky 'Hitman' Hatton. The 29 year-old from Gilroy, California mentioned at the time that his sole focus was upcoming opponent Andre Berto and any other fights would be considered after his November 24 clash with the former world title holder. Hatton, 33, fights himself on the same night against Vyacheslav Senchenko at the Manchester Arena and Guerrero is 100% behind the Briton’s return to the ring, even without classing him as a future foe just yet. “Ricky Hatton is and will always be, a popular fighter in the UK,” Guerrero told World Boxing News. “He is good for boxing if he can get back on track as he brings a lot of fans to the U.S. when he fights here and that’s a good thing. I hope he does well wit...

Guerrero: I want Floyd, but if he ducks I’ll go for Canelo or Lopez at 154!

Frank Stea Picture by Stacey Verbeek ‘The Ghost’ eyes pound for pound king Newly crowned WBC welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero has barely time to relax and enjoy his victory over previously unbeaten Selcuk Aydin as nine days after winning his sixth world title, Guerrero stopped by ATG Radio to talk about his recent win. “I went out there and got the job done. I made it happen,” Guerrero stated. “This is my sixth world title in four different weight classes. People don’t realize that I started my career at 122lbs.  Moving all those weight classes was a huge accomplishment.” With being a world a world champion in four different weight classes, Guerrero had trouble getting the big fights in the weight classes below the welterweight division. The current interim champion with the WBC stated that boxing’s marquee division is where he wants to reign supreme, but would be willing to move up again to face the winner of Saul Alvarez and Josesito Lopez....

Robert Guerrero set for welterweight bow

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Aydin test for ‘The Ghost’ Three-weight world champion Robert Guerrero will make his welterweight debut on July 28 th against WBC silver welterweight champion Selcuk Aydin for the chance to become mandatory challenger to belt holder Floyd Mayweather. The 28 year-old, who has been out of the ring almost a year with injury, had hoped to meet Mayweather on his May 5 th date at the MGM Grand but has now seemingly settled for the opportunity to force the five-weight world title holder’s hand. Aydin, also 28, is undefeated in 23 contests so far and has been waiting since July 2009 for his chance to fight for the full WBC title after winning an eliminator that never transpired to bring him his shot. The match-up has been slated to take place in San Jose, California at the HP Pavillion, with broadcasters Showtime picking up the rights to the fight and more support will be added soon.

Robert Guerrero edging ahead to oppose Floyd Mayweather

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Rumour mill points to ‘The Ghost’ on Cinco de Mayo Three-weight world title holder Robert Guerrero (29-1, 18 KO’s) has emerged as the frontrunner to become Floyd Mayweather Jr’s 43 rd professional opponent on May 5 th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The 28 year-old, who has been out injured since August after shoulder surgery, is reportedly in advanced negotiations with Mayweather according to several reliable internet sources and could be announced as early as this Friday for his fourth world title challenge. Mayweather, 34, had hoped to face rival Manny Pacquiao on the date in question although the Filipino’s promoter Bob Arum believes his fighter won’t be ready until June and will pitch four alternatives to the ‘Pacman’ this week as he visits the Philippines. That has left ‘Money’ Mayweather to look at other options to fill the void, with Guerrero and WBC light-middleweight champion Saul Alvarez the clear favourites due to their inv...

Michael Katsidis to take stock before ring return

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Tough Aussie fighter aims to come back with a win Although he ultimately faced another disappointment in the United States last Saturday, Michael Katsidis’ trainer Brendon Smith praised his fighter, before revealing that his charge will have some time away from the sport, before hopefully returning victorious. The 30 year-old lost for the second time in a row in Las Vegas in another "Fight of the year" contender against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. The Aussie gave everything to the cause for the duration of the fight, which has almost become his trademark of late and is what the American public expects of “The Great”. “It’s still too early to make any decisions,” Smith stated to finda.com.au “The thing is Michael is fighting the best in the division. Guerrero is a two-time world champion and was the number one contender and we fought a future Hall of Fame boxer in Marquez before that. “I think it’s important his next fight is a win, but we’l...

Guerrero outclasses warrior Katsidis

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor “The Ghost” claims landslide points victory over tough Aussie Former IBF 126 and 130lb champion Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s ) took a huge step into the upper echelons of the lightweight and world pound for pound rankings with a dominant display over twelve rounds against a never-say-die Michael Katsidis (27-4, 22 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The 28 year-old kept the rugged Australian at bay with a strong southpaw jab and powerful combinations, frustrating “The Great” right till the end to claim wide points win. The Californian started the better and got straight into his rhythm until midway through the second round, “The Ghost” was then put down by a huge shot by Kastidis, which referee Russell Mora did not see. Guerrero recovered well from what would be Katsidis best moment in the fight and got straight back to dominating Katsidis behind the jab until the eighth round, when the Aussie changed tactics and launched a body assault, only t...
