Mayweather lines up Guerrero, then Alvarez for 2013

As reported by WBN in December, Robert Guerrero looks set to earn a shot at WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4th, beating Saul Alvarez for the privilege of challenging the greatest fighter of his generation.

The 29 year-old has been slated to be the 44th foe to attempt to overthrow Mayweather in his sixteen-year career and could conceivably be formally announced next week. Rumours are now circulating that Saul Alvarez will be next in line for 'Money' once he makes a successful appearance as chief support.

The card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is to be named ‘Cinco de Mayweather’ as it takes place on the same weekend as the Mexican holiday and will hold significance for both Guerrero and Jalisco-born Alvarez.

The bout will be the first for Mayweather, 35, since his incarceration between June and August last year, with the touted second fight against 'Canelo' planned for September as the American looks to cement his place as the pound for pound best.

The clash with Guerrero should now mean that Mayweather will relinquish the WBA 154lb super title that he claimed when defeating Miguel Cotto in May 2012 and would then leave Austin Trout as the sole recognised belt holder for the organisation.

'No Doubt' Trout has been linked to a WBC and WBA light-middleweight unification with Alvarez on the date in question in the past - although nothing has yet been confirmed.

Recently the youngster was given the opportunity to spar with Australia’s IBO world light-heavyweight champion Danny Green as he prepares to take on Antonio Tarver and gain valuable experience before his trip to Europe. Opetaia, who hails from Watanobbi, has already taken former world champion Anthony Mundine a few rounds in sparring and has added another world renowned boxer to the list in 38 year-old Green.
