Reports of finalised world title defence premature
WBA welterweight title holder Paul Malignaggi has revealed to
WBN that his proposed defence against three-weight world champion ‘Sugar’ Shane
Mosley in the spring is not 100 per cent done yet.
The ‘Magic Man’ is reported to be close to agreeing the
fight with Mosley, which would see the New Yorker put his belt on the line for
the second time since dethroning Vyacheslav Senchenko in April of last year.
The 32 year-old, who is himself a world champion at two
weight divisions, was hoping to face old rival Ricky Hatton in the coming
months until the ‘Hitman’ was beaten in his November comeback – ironically by
Senchenko.
It now looks very likely that Mosley and Malignaggi will
reach an agreement for the Barclays Center clash on April 27th and the bout represent the challenger’s first outing since announcing his retirement last
May.
Mosley, 41, was beaten for the eighth time in his career by
WBC light-middleweight king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, but still believes he can
mix it at 147 and aims to prove it against ‘The Twitter King’ on the champion’s
home turf.
The Californian fight veteran told World Boxing News yesterday that the
fight was a done deal - with an announcement is expected sooner, rather than later
by fight organizers Golden Boy Promotions.
