Helenius happy with Williams performance

Picture credit: Seppo Sirkka, Eastpress.fi Robert Helenius (18-0, 11 KOs) celebrated a successful ring return on Saturday night in Finland. Making his first fight in 11 months due to shoulder surgery, the Nordic Nightmare outpointed battle-tested Sherman “The Tank” Williams (35-12-2, 19 KOs) in front of 4,032 fans at the Helsinki Ice Hall. Helenius was ahead  99-91, 99-93 and 98-93 on the cards.  He controlled the bout behind his long jab and kept landing body shots with his right, also firing in one-two combinations. However, the Tank had his moment in the sixth round when he landed his trademark overhand right. But Helenius proved his chin and regained control in the next rounds.  “I´m back,” Helenius said. “This was a good comeback win for me. Williams was a dangerous opponent, he came here to fight. But I think I fought a good fight. I´m happy with my performance.” Said Williams: “I promised to bring sunshine. We got three days of sunshine and Robert...

Helenius no threat to Klitschko on Williams display

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Nordic Nightmare’ fails to scare in Helsinki Heavyweight contender Robert Helenius maintained his unbeaten record with a ten-round points win over Sherman Williams in Helsinki, although failed to set the Ice Hall alight with his performance. Given that the 28 year-old was coming back from a serious shoulder injury after an eleven-month absence, he could then be forgiven as he struggled to make a dent in an opponent with a seven-inch height disadvantage. Helenius improved his record to 18-0 with a 99-91, 99-93, 98-93 victory, but will need to do a lot more to convince fight fans that he is ready to be a force against Wladimir Klitschko. A European title bout against Kubrat Pulev could be in offing for the Finn next, although it could even be argued that Helenius is not yet in a position to oppose the unbeaten Bulgarian for his old title.

Helenius talks injury, comeback and fighting Fury or Klitschko

Frank Stea Senior Reporter In 2011, undefeated heavyweight contender Robert Helenius 17-0 (11KOs) was being touted as the next big thing in the heavyweight division.  Many experts were picking the 28 year old power puncher to succeed Wladimir Klitschko as the next dominant champion.  A fight with Dereck Chisora in December of 2011 halted some of the momentum towards heavyweight supremacy and although Helenius would go on to a points win over Chisora in his homeland of Helsinki, Finland, question marks were raised over the decision. Helenius offered no excuses for his uninspiring performance, but it was later found out that he fought the fight with a severely injured shoulder, an injury that has kept him out of action for almost a full year. ‘The Nordic Nightmare’ is now scheduled to make his long awaited return on November 10 th and WBN recently caught up with Helenius to talk about his comeback progress. “Everything is working good now. I’m in training...

Dereck Chisora releases statement on Robert Helenius 'loss'

Dereck Chisora  Calls and messages of support following my supposed “loss” to Robert Helenius, have compelled me to break my silence. On Saturday, the whole world saw yet another travesty in our beloved sport of boxing when the judges dubiously awarded the vacant ECB belt to my opponent, Robert Helenius. So bad was the call that I felt I could have just stayed away in north London and watched Helenius’ “coronation” as European Boxing’s Lord and Emperor in the comfort of home on the telly! I am not one to moan and bleat about a bad result. The heavyweight I am is built to take knocks and trips, my champion instincts cajole me to stand up when I fall or lose; and the disciplined professional athlete in me is ever gracious even in the most unjust defeats. And as Saturday’s is one – and a glaring, blatant one – I feel it’s only fair that I demand an immediate rematch against Helenius. The thousands who came to see the fight in that massive Hartwall Areena on Saturday ...
