Lightweight title bout finalized for March 16

WBO champion Ricky Burns and IBF title holder Miguel Vazquez are set to put their respective lightweight belts on the line in huge spring unification at Wembley Arena on March 16.

Scotland’s Burns, 29 and 26 year-old Mexican Vazquez had both been linked to a unification clash with formidable WBC champion Adrien Broner, although have now decided to face each other in tasty-looking spring battle

Burns’ promoter Frank Warren made the formal announcement to the press regarding the contest on Monday, where a packed undercard featuring WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly, George Groves and Dereck Chisora was also made public.

Vazquez, who has lost three from 36 bouts, saw his stock rise in his last bout as he ended unbeaten Top Rank prospect Mercito Gesta’s perfect record with a wide points decision win at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Coatbridge-based Burns on the other hand, has won world titles in two different weights and will look to put himself at the top of the lightweight tree, with a view to tackling 'The Problem 'Broner in a summer showdown at a US venue.
