Arum looks to match world champions Viloria and Gonzalez

Nick Giongco Bob Arum the world’s most powerful promoter, is reportedly keen on staging the mouth-watering matchup featuring Brian Viloria and Nicaraguan knockout king Roman Gonzalez possibly in Manila this year. Although Arum, the big boss of Top Rank, did not say exactly where he wants the fight held, the 81-year-old Hall of Famer, stressed that putting it up in Honolulu, the birthplace of Viloria, isn’t as attractive as having it take place in Asia. Fernando Beltran, Arum’s counterpart in Mexico, has rights over Gonzalez and Beltran’s Zanfer Promotions, has expressed interest in working with Top Rank in making the fight happen. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Hawaiian Punch’ ends Mexican’s challenge in ten WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria added the WBA version to his belt haul with a huge tenth round stoppage win over Hernan ‘Tyson’ Marquez at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles. The 31 year-old, who had previously built up a big points lead by dropping the Mexican in rounds one and five, looked to be slowing in the ninth as Marquez took charge and seemed to be giving ground late on. After a barrage from Marquez early in the tenth, Viloria produced a vicious left hand to drop the WBA champion heavily and there was no way back for the Sonora fighter, who was dropped again seconds later. Jay  WBN Editor Hawaiian packs punch to claim revenge Brian Viloria successfully defended his WBO flyweight title with a ninth round stoppage win over nemesis Omar Nino Romero to claim his first win over the Mexican in three attempts at the Ynares Sports Arena. The 31 year-old has now halted three of his last five opponents with what turned out to be a dominant performance over Romero, 36, who buckled in the ninth round, leading to referee Mike Ortega relieving the challenger’s pressure. ‘Hawaiian Punch’ could now make his next defence against Rodel Mayol of the Philippines after the former WBC light-flyweight belt holder scored a ten-round win over Mexican Julio Cesar Miranda on the undercard. ‘Kid Rapido’ was surprisingly in control of the bout throughout in Pasig City and was given an emphatic decision by the three judges, who scored the contest 100-87, 99-90 and 97-91 .

Jay  WBN Editor The ‘Pinoy Punch’ retains his title Brian Viloria produced a career-best performance to defeat former light-flyweight king Giovani Segura and retain his WBO flyweight title in Pasig City, Philippines last night. The 31 year-old surprisingly dominated the Mexican over the eight rounds, causing a swelling on his face before taking him out in the eighth round to inflict Segura’s second career loss to the home crowds delight. The two-weight world champion is now undefeated in four bouts and will move on to a possible unification in 2012 after causing one of the shocks of the year. The Mexican’s sole focus is a successful fourth defence of his belt against Hawaiian former two-time world light-flyweight champion Brian Viloria in California tonight.
