Bad taste in the mouth for boxing once again

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Adamek win rankles with fans Another judging decision has caused many boxing fans to become disillusioned with the sport once again after the shambolic announcement of Tomasz Adamek’s win over Steve Cunningham in Pennsylvania last night. Even veteran ring announcer Michael Buffer could not hide his embarrassment as a 115-115 scorecard reading was rectified to hand the Pole a decisive 115-112 third card and the undeserved victory in Bethlehem. The general consensus amongst fans on social media sites and through forums was that Cunningham came through the entertaining twelve-round battle with a closely-fought points win, which mirrored my card of 115-113 to the American. Although ‘USS’ was given that score by Tom Miller, cards by Debra Barnes and Dave Greer ultimately saw the fight Adamek’s way to the disbelief of the neutral and Cunningham fans and has once again opened a debate for an overhaul of judging. High profile scoring mishaps, ...

Draw announced, then corrected as Adamek beats Cunningham

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Pole claims entertaining IBF heavyweight #2 spot eliminator victory Tomasz Adamek claimed a close split decision over Steve Cunningham on the judges scorecards for the second time in his career to put himself into contention for another world title chance. The two-weight world champion, who defeated Cunningham previously in 2008, seemingly edged the closer rounds with the officials to come out on top at the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Both fighters refused to take a backward step in what was one of the most enthralling heavyweight contests of recent times and there would be no complaints if a third instalment was announced in the near future. The judges carded 116-112, 115-112 for Adamek, with a third handing Cunningham a 115-113, which coincided with my card, although neither fighter deserved to lose after giving their all for the full twelve rounds. The result had originally been announced as a draw with legendary annou...

Klitschko confirms he will fight Haye on July 2nd at the Imtech Arena

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Date and venue finalized for eagerly awaited unification WBO and IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has finally confirmed that he will square off against WBA title holder and arch-rival David Haye in a four-belt unification bout in Hamburg, Germany on July 2nd. Both fighters have agreed on a 50-50 purse for the bout and after over two-years of wrangling, the two fighters will finally have a  focal point for their heavyweight grudge match, with German football club Hamburger SV’s impressive 57,000 capacity Imtech Arena rubberstamped to host the summer bout. Klitschko, 35, is undefeated in over seven years and has a formidable 58 fight record, with 55 victories, whilst 30 year-old Haye has just one loss in his 26 bouts. The Londoner holds an unbeaten three-year record since moving up to heavyweight after unifying the cruiserweight division and will retire from boxing in October. Should the “Hayemaker” be successful in the summer, he cou...

Roy Jones stepping back up to Heavyweight?

Heavyweight scene a step too far for aging champ With reports gathering about another possible venture into heavyweight by former undisputed light-heavyweight king Roy Jones Jr, WBN believes that a match up with the big punching Pole Tomasz Adamek is the last thing that Roy needs at this stage of his career. Jones Jr, 41, lost his last fight at 175lbs to old foe Bernard Hopkins in April, whilst his last venture up the divisions ended with a devastating first round knockout defeat at cruiserweight against Australian IBO Champion Danny Green. A further move up for Jones could be a career-ending move as Adamek himself is a former crusierweight, but has added an extra twenty pounds to his frame and I fear, it could be too much for Roy, who should really have retired after his second defeat against Antonio Tarver in 2005. With all of Roy’s achievements, being a four-weight world champion and holding numerous world titles, Roy should be able to relax and wait for his place in the boxi...
