Cunningham sets sights on seventh pro win

Stafford Middleweight, Grant Cunningham, is hoping to be in seventh heaven next week when he takes on Mitch Mitchell on the undercard of Frankie Gavin’s first British Welterweight title defence against Jason Welborn at Walsall Town Hall.

The 26 year-old from Stafford is looking to extend his unbeaten start to his professional boxing career to seven straight wins when he takes on the Lincolnshire scrapper known as ‘Mad Mitch’ (1-2) next Friday, 18th January.

“I don’t know too much about him, I’m just concentrating on my game and building on my 6-0 record,” he told www.uko-boxing.com. “He’s had three fights. He has won one, by stoppage, and lost the other two so he’s a bit of an unknown quantity.

“It’s all about learning my craft at the moment. I’m confident in my ability and I trust in my Manager and Trainer, Errol Johnson, to match me right. We have a plan for my career and I’m happy with how things are going.

“I’m at that stage when I need to keep building my record and staying busy. This is my first fight of 2013 and I’m aiming to fight 6 or 7 times this year. I’m feeling good.”

Cunningham has been working alongside stablemates Jason Welborn and Martin Gethin in the build-up to their respective British title fights at the top of next Friday’s bill.

Rowley Regis’ Welborn challenges Birmingham’s Frankie Gavin for the welterweight strap at the top of the bill whilst Gethin, from Walsall, takes on Hove’s Ben Murphy for the British & Commonwealth Lightweight titles. The show is a complete sell-out and Cunningham admits that the buzz around the fight has whetted his own appetite to achieve things in the sport he loves.
“It’s going to be a great night of boxing, he added. “You can see that Jason and Martin are buzzing and that rubs off on you when you’re in the gym with them.

“That’s where I want to be when it’s the right time for me. Obviously I want to be out there winning titles one day. It’s too early for talk of that at the moment but that’s obviously what I’m working towards.

“To be on the same bill as someone like Frankie Gavin is a big thing and it does whet your appetite to succeed and push forward.  It’s going to be a really good atmosphere. We need these Town Hall shows. It’s going to be very good for Midlands boxing.

“It’s a great show to be part of and will definitely be one of the shows of the year.

The fight takes place on promoter Frank Warren's first show of 2013 - in association with Midlands promoter Errol Johnson – at Walsall Town Hall on Friday, 18th January. The show is a sell-out but it is also live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546). Subscribe at www.boxnation.com.

WBN Remembers: "Gypsy Boy" Ernie Smith

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor (picure by boxrec.com) After almost a year and a half without one of boxing’s great journeymen, World Boxing News is looking back at the 161-fight career of Worcestershire warrior Ernie Smith, concentrating on his contribution in the ring, rather than the tragic way his life ended out of it. Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie ga...
