Frankie Gavin promises to 'take apart' Jason Welborn

Frankie Gavin says he’s ready to destroy ahead of his West Midlands blockbuster derby against Jason Welborn on Friday 18th January. The unbeaten Birmingham star makes the first defence of his British Welterweight title at a sold-out Walsall Town Hall, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546). Midlands Area champ Welborn from Tividale has won three of his last four fights by stoppage, but Gavin, still Britain’s only ever World amateur champion, is confident he’ll do a number on his rival. “I’m in the best shape of my life, I’m fitter than a butcher’s dog and I can’t wait for next Friday night,” Said Gavin. “I’ve worked my arse off in the gym with my trainer Tom Chaney and we’ve had the best training camp so far to prepare for this fight.  I feel I’ve improved a lot since the Junior Witter fight last November and he was probably the most awkward opponent I could have faced, but I well beat him,” “Welborn’s style will suite me down to th...

Tom Chaney: Frankie Gavin getting back to his old self

Frankie Gavin’s trainer Tom Chaney says that winning the British Welterweight title has put  a sparkle in his fighter and that he’ll shine on Friday 18th January at Walsall Town Hall when he defends against Jason Welborn. Chaney, who took Gavin to two ABA titles, Commonwealth Gold and a World title in the amateurs, joined Gavin in the professional ranks as his trainer at the beginning of last year and helped the young star through personal problems that affected his form. Since then the pair have racked up three wins together culminating last November when Gavin put on his best performance to date against Junior Witter to win the British title, outpointing the wiley veteran at London’s York Hall. Unbeaten Birmingham ace Gavin is looking to start his 2013 campaign on a high against his West Midlands rival Welborn at a sold-out Walsall Town Hall, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546), before targeting the Commonwealth and European titles. ...

“12 rounds” with amatuer star Tom Stalker – Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Tom picks up his 2010 Amateur Boxer of the Year award Thomas Stalker was born in Liverpool in 1984, where a life in boxing seemed a million miles away. As young lad, he would get himself into scrapes, which eventually escalated, as he got older. In his teenage years, Tom got in with the wrong crowd and was involved in petty crime, a life that is all too common in the Huyton area of Liverpool where Tom grew up. At 18, with a pregnant girlfriend and with no real direction in his life, Tom decided he needed to find a better outlet for his energy and opted to go down to a local gym which he and his two brothers frequented, St Aloysius ABC. Tom was instantly hooked on the sport and would always be one of the last people to leave the gym; he had his first amateur bout a year after he first walked into the gym as it became clear he had real natural talent. He spent the next couple of years training religiously, gaining experience and harnessing all he s...
