Antonio Margarito releases retirement statement

Antonio Margarito  Dear Family, Friends, and Fans, After twenty-two years of full dedication to the profession I love, I have made the decision to announce my retirement from boxing.  After much thought and extended conversations with my family and team, we have all agreed that the time to hang up my gloves and begin a new chapter in life has arrived. I always told my family and team that I would walk away from box ing when I felt I could no longer compete at the level I believed I needed to be, in order to be successful. Although the passion and drive are still there, I have to accept that my time to walk away has arrived. I want to take this opportunity to thank Michelle and my family for their support, encouragement, and most of all, their love. Not only did they give me their unconditional love and support during the good times, their love and support grew larger during the times that I was at my lowest.  I also want to thank my team, Sergio Diaz Jr and Fr...

Masterclass from Cotto ends Margarito argument in ten

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Junito’ outclasses ‘Tony’ in one-sided affair Miguel Angel Cotto not only retained his WBA light-middleweight title in Madison Square Garden tonight, but the Puerto Rican exercised a three-year demon that had cast a shadow over his glittering career by defeating Antonio Margarito. The 31 year-old was beaten for the first time in his career by the Mexican in 2008 in what has since transpired to be a contentious and questioned stoppage loss after Margarito was found with illegal substances in his wraps in his next fight with Shane Mosley. Margarito, 33, was almost denied a license to box in the first place because of an eye injury suffered against Manny Pacquaio in his last bout and Cotto immediately targeted the right side of the challenger’s face and the swelling was gradual from the second round. Cotto produced a wonderful display of boxing from the first bell as he danced around Margarito and racked up the rounds by hitting him wi...

Margarito granted license as Cotto issues ultimatum

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Mexican to fight in New York on December 3 rd Former world champion Antonio Margarito will challenge Miguel Cotto for the WBA light-middleweight title at Madison Square Garden as planned on December 3 rd after the New York State Athletic Commision granted him a license. The 33 year-old was forced to undergo stringent eye tests after initially being denied a license last week and after travelling from his base in Mexico to be thoroughly checked by doctors, is now clear to take his place on the HBO card next month. At a teleconference today, champion Cotto, 31, had stipulated that the fight will have to go ahead in New York or he would be forced to draft in a new opponent only to be told later that the fight will happen as planned. Margarito picked up the injury after a one-sided twelve-rounder with current welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao that has kept him out of boxing for the past year and ‘Tony’ will now get the chance to face Co...

Pacquiao is gr-eight!

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Filipino legend picks up another title Manny Pacquiao picked up his eighth boxing title in an eighth different weight-class by easily out-pointing Mexican former three-time world champion Antonio Margarito at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas. The “Pacman” took immediate control from the first bell and won almost every round on the judges scorecards as the “Tornado” wilted under the pressure of Pacquiao’s speed and pressure combinations. Pacquiao’s relentless come forward style was all too much for Margarito, opening up a cut on his cheek and gradually closing his right eye to the point that Pacquiao asked the referee to step in and stop the fight in the eleventh round. Margarito did catch the eight-time champion with a superb body shot in the sixth, dipping the legs of Pacquiao, but the Filipino came back with yet another combination to make it to the end of the round. Margarito made it to the last bell, but the judges scorecards...
