Denton Vassell planning America trip in 2013

denton vassell1.jpg

Denton Vassell returned to action with bang in November and is now targeting the bright lights of Las Vegas.
After a more than a year out of the ring, the welterweight boxed smartly before taking out Ronnie Heffron with uppercuts at the Manchester Arena.
And at 28 years of age, he now feels the time is right to take those skills on the road, with Sin City being the ultimate destination.
"I know with my style I'll get noticed and liked in Vegas. I'm an exciting boxer to watch and they like that in America. They'll love me because of the way I fight," he told Hatton Boxing.
"That's why they liked Ricky Hatton over there, because he was all-action and he keep coming forwards.
"I look at all those that have got to the top and boxed there and I don't see them as being any different to me. They've got two arms and two legs and I know I work hard enough to achieve as much as they have.
"I'm ready to go over there as soon as possible. I'm in my prime and I train hard so why not? There's still titles to win over here, but you never know what might happen in boxing."
Those titles on these shores include the British crown. Frankie Gavin will make his first defence of the belt against Jason Welborn next week, but Vassell feels a fight can happen if an offer to get his passport out and head Stateside doesn't come.
"He's got a fight coming up but we can have that fight later in the year," he said.
"I want to win the British, but there's also the European. I'll take all comers because I train so hard and I believe I can beat anyone and win any title."
Another match-up with the Mancunian admits interests him is a return with Colchester's Lee Purdy.
Vassell defeated the Essex man to win his Commonwealth strap in an April 2010 fight of the year contender, but despite discussions a rematch has failed to materialise.
"I've heard that he's said I was scared of fighting him again. Why would I be scared? I've beat him once already," Denton pondered.
"When he said I didn't want to fight we both had other fights. He was fighting Colin Lynes and I was matched up with Samuel Colomban. He lost to Lynes as well so he then didn't have nothing for me to fight him for.
"Now he's come back well and won that belt (the IBF International title) we can do it again."
He added: "2013 is my time to shine. I prepared to fight anyone."

WBN Remembers: "Gypsy Boy" Ernie Smith

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor (picure by boxrec.com) After almost a year and a half without one of boxing’s great journeymen, World Boxing News is looking back at the 161-fight career of Worcestershire warrior Ernie Smith, concentrating on his contribution in the ring, rather than the tragic way his life ended out of it. Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie ga...
