Boxing legend ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier dies aged 67

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Former heavyweight champion succumbs to liver cancer The announcement was only made on Saturday that ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier had been diagnosed with liver cancer four weeks prior and just three days later the boxer’s life has been claimed by the illness. Philadelphia-native Frazier, who was just 67, faced an impossible battle against the disease after chances to catch the cancer early were missed by previous doctors and by the time it was diagnosed, Frazier was in the latter stages of the cancer. Frazier won the Olympic gold medal in 1964 before embarking on an illustrious professional career, claiming heavyweight title in 1968 and unifying the title in 1970 to become undisputed champion of the world. The Beaufort-born fighter held the title for three years until he met his ultimate foe in George Foreman, who would be the only man that Frazier would face and not defeat in his sixteen-year career. Ultimately though, Frazier will forever...

Frazier’s manager reveals cancer went undetected by doctors

Jay  WBN Editor Joe with son Marvis Former champ weighs up options in cancer fight Former undisputed world heavyweight champion Joe Frazier’s manager has spoken to BBC Radio 5 Live about some of the options that are available to the seriously ill fighter, who has been inundated with offers of treatment since news broke of his condition. The 67 year-old, who is known worldwide for his three battles with Muhammad Ali, has final-stage liver cancer which they believe has gone back far longer than the four weeks that they found out and doctors in America have not given the ex-champ any hope of recovery. Frazier’s manager Leslie Wolff told the BBC that although the outlook is bleak, they will continue to look into any possibilities, including travelling to other countries in the world - especially Europe. “Unfortunately, we think it went back quite a while,” explained Wolff. “In my opinion there was a lot of misdiagnosis. Since this story broke, we ha...

Frazier terminally ill with liver cancer

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Smokin Joe’ receiving hospice care Former undisputed world heavyweight champion Joe Frazier has been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer and is currently receiving hospice care in the US. Doctors believe that there isn’t much they can do to aid the stricken boxer’s recovery and the Philadelphian is to be made as comfortable as possible with no timescale to his length of life. Frazier, 67, captured the heavyweight title in 1968 before unifying the title in 1970 and becoming the first man to beat ‘The Greatest’ Muhammad Ali in 1971 in Madison Square Garden. The Beaufort-born fighter will forever be linked to one of the greatest fights in the history of boxing in 1975 when he went toe-to-toe with Ali in their brutal third meeting the ‘Thrilla in Manila’ in the Philippines. In 1964, Frazier captured an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo which set him on the road to boxing stardom and Frazier would eventually go 29 professional bouts without loss before meetin...
