McPhilbin: Dickinson is better than Maccarinelli, but I can still take him

Shane McPhilbin wants back something he feels was taken from him unfairly – the British cruiserweight title. In a dramatic contest that saw both men hit the deck, Shane wrenched the belt from former champion Leon 'Solid' Williams via a final round KO in January this year. Just two months later, however, in his first defence against Enzo Maccarinelli, McPhilbin found himself on the wrong end of a genuine ring injustice. Having already put Enzo over, and with the Welshman out on his feet and on the verge of being stopped, the bell to end the first round was tolled 47 seconds early!  Consequently, with that early, unfair respite proving long enough for Maccarinelli to recover his senses, Shane ultimately ended up losing his crown on a points decision. Throw into the mix too, then, that Enzo was also banned after the bout for failing a random drugs test and you can understand that Shane, 8-3 (5), feels hard done by that he won't be facing County Durham...

McPhilbin on Maccarinelli: It’s a disgrace - I’d have been banned for life!

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Former champion comments on drugs ban Shane McPhilbin has opened up to WBN on former opponent Enzo Maccarinelli’s recent six-month ban for testing positive for a banned substance and has branded the former champion’s actions ‘a disgrace’ to the sport. The former British cruiserweight champion, who lost his title to the Swansea fighter in March, follows Maccarinelli’s former trainer Enzo Calzaghe in condemning the actions of the 31 year-old fighter. “Well I think it’s a disgrace that someone of his profile can sink to drugs,” McPhilbin told World Boxing News. “He got six months ban, but if I had done it I would have been banned for life.” McPhilbin, 26, put Maccarinelli down in the first round of their meeting at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton and controversy reigned when the Welshman was saved by the bell 47 seconds before the end of the round. Maccarinelli went on to take the title via a unanimous decision on the scorecards and...

40 seconds disappear as Maccarinelli wins British title

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Controversial start mars Welshman’s win Enzo Maccarinelli is the new British cruiserweight champion following an amazing start to an all-round entertaining clash at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton as Shane McPhilibin was roundly beaten after a blistering start. The 26 year-old title holder was fighting in only his 11 th pro contest tonight, but rocked the former world champion in the first round more than once and had the Swansea man down after just over two minutes of the opener. The controversy came as Maccarinelli rose to his feet with 2:08 on the clock and the bell keeper at ringside astonishingly signalled the end of the round after a few more seconds with Maccarinelli apparently out on his feet. McPhilbin never seemed to make much fuss about the ending to the round but it may have been a completely different story if the Nottinghamshire fighter was able to finish his good work and end the fight to retain his belt. Maccarinelli...
