‘The Ghost’ eyes pound for pound king

Newly crowned WBC welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero has barely time to relax and enjoy his victory over previously unbeaten Selcuk Aydin as nine days after winning his sixth world title, Guerrero stopped by ATG Radio to talk about his recent win.

“I went out there and got the job done. I made it happen,” Guerrero stated.

“This is my sixth world title in four different weight classes. People don’t realize that I started my career at 122lbs.  Moving all those weight classes was a huge accomplishment.”

With being a world a world champion in four different weight classes, Guerrero had trouble getting the big fights in the weight classes below the welterweight division. The current interim champion with the WBC stated that boxing’s marquee division is where he wants to reign supreme, but would be willing to move up again to face the winner of Saul Alvarez and Josesito Lopez.

“147lbs is where I want to be. I had trouble getting fights at all those other weight classes. A lot of the media would say that Robert Guerrero never fought a name guy. Well no name guys wanted to step inside the ring with me and that is why I had to move up all these weight classes.

“I think it is much easier staying in one weight class and fighting all the top guys. Guys like (Juan Manuel) Marquez didn’t want to get in there with me and now I am the number one contender to fight Floyd.

“If I can’t get him or any other fights here, then I just might move up to 154lbs.” stated Guerrero.

Robert Guerrero and his team have been on the manhunt of securing a fight with Floyd Mayweather for almost two years. Now possessing the back-up title to the belt Mayweather knocked out Victor Ortiz to claim, Guerrero is daring boxing’s biggest attraction to face him for the full WBC title.

“Definitely he’s noticing me now.  I’m holding this title. I really feel that I am the next best fight for him.  I won six world titles in four weight classes. Not too many fighters jump up two weight classes and fight for the world title. So you know he’s noticing me now.  Now if the fight isn’t made, it’s because he is ducking.”

When asked about Floyd Mayweather’s new hairstyle and physique since being released from prison, Guerrero jokingly had this to say: “I think he needs to go back to being bald.”

Guerrero spoke more on Mayweather, talked potential future fights with Marquez, Pacquaio, Bradley, Berto, and more.

WBN Remembers: "Gypsy Boy" Ernie Smith

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor (picure by boxrec.com) After almost a year and a half without one of boxing’s great journeymen, World Boxing News is looking back at the 161-fight career of Worcestershire warrior Ernie Smith, concentrating on his contribution in the ring, rather than the tragic way his life ended out of it. Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie ga...

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Treasure’ training for August 24 return Former British light-welterweight champion Ashley Theophane is aiming to put the disappointment of his loss to Darren Hamilton behind him when he makes his comeback in Charlotte, North Carolina on August 24. The 31 year-old, who has fought some of the top fighters between 140 and 154lbs, planned to take 18 months out of chasing his world title dream to win a British Lonsdale belt outright and just fell short with points defeat to Hamilton in May after making two defences. He fights for the 38th time in his career against an opponent yet to be named at NC Music Factory’s Reelworks Studios and is currently preparing to get back to winning ways. “Training has gone well for this fight.
