Delvin Rodriguez awaiting next move

AJ Galante
(Delvin Rodriguez's manager)
Had a good meeting with Delvin this week. Usually when we meet I like to get an update on how he’s feeling physically, as well as what he’s been doing working out wise. I update him on everything outside of the ring. This week Delvin let me know that he’s been doing his running, and started back working a few days a week with our strength and conditioning coach Matt Patren. Delvin is in shape 24/7/365, but obviously when there is a match coming, the workouts intensify.

Unfortunately at this present time, there is no match on the horizon, but in this business, you have to be ready at a moments notice. I can get a call from our Promoter Joe DeGuardia, and he may say that somebody got injured for an upcoming match, and we have a chance to replace them. Sometimes that could be on a four week notice. That’s not ideal, but if the opportunity is a good one, you have to be ready. That’s why i stress to these guys to stay working. I’m very lucky that I have a team that always is working, and Delvin is not lazy. He’s always working out and that’s a good thing.

During our meeting this week, I mapped out a couple of ideas that I thought would be most beneficial to us. My main job as a manager is to deal with the business side of things. I work with our promoter, and together, we map out what we feel is best for Delvin.

At the end of the day, I give Delvin the final call on any decision. Most managers simply tell their boxers what to do, but I don’t do that. I will come up what I feel is the best option for Delvin and try to sell it to him. I feel I’ve earned Delvin’s trust, and he knows I always have my finger on the pulse. Very rarely do we disagree, which is a good thing. Delvin was receptive to my ideas this week, and we will see what happens. Ideally, we’d like to get two more matches by the end of the year, but there’s a lot of other factors out of our hands for that to happen.

We have a great young strength and conditioning coach, Matt Patren. Him and Delvin have a great relationship, and since working with him, Matt has gotten Delvin in much better condition for upcoming fights.

Right now, the two are in ‘pre-training camp mode’ which is nothing super strenuous, but is a must for any boxer. When a fight is announced or I feel we will have something going on soon, Fernely Feliz, our head trainer, will start doing his boxing work with ‘D’

Next week I’m going to be blogging daily, some days boxing, some days random things that I think about that hopefully will make you laugh.

I want to give a special shout out to my good friend Mike Nahabedian in Florida for reading my blog. Mike and I go way back, and were once arch enemies in 3rd grade. I will let you know next week how he was basically handed over the 3rd and 4th grade spelling bee title, without any true competition.

I will get some pictures of training as soon as possible for you. I am also working on a Elite Boxing Enterprises youtube channel, which will have a lot of interviews, workout clips, etc. Keep checking daily on my blog, and follow me on twitter: @eliteboxing_ajg

WBN Remembers: "Gypsy Boy" Ernie Smith

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor (picure by boxrec.com) After almost a year and a half without one of boxing’s great journeymen, World Boxing News is looking back at the 161-fight career of Worcestershire warrior Ernie Smith, concentrating on his contribution in the ring, rather than the tragic way his life ended out of it. Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie ga...

BBC make Luke Campbell mum and sister death gaffe

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Picture from the BBC  Gabby Logan announces wrong family tragedy The BBC made a major mistake on the final showing of their Olympics Tonight show as host Gabby Logan sparked an anxious quizzing by boxer Luke Campbell’s fans as they announced the ‘loss’ of his mother and sister at a young age. Campbell, 24, took the gold medal in the men’s bantamweight final earlier in the day and was then congratulated by Logan, who announced his victory as a triumph over adversity after the Hull fighter suffered the tragedy six years ago. Unbeknown to presenter Logan, it was Welshman Freddie Evans, who also boxes in an Olympic final tomorrow, who suffered the tragedy as he lost his mother Tracy and sister Scarlett in a car accident in 2006. Fans of Olympic champion Campbell and boxing in general, immediately began handing out sympathy to the boxer after believing what was announced to be true. Logan, after an outcry on social networking websi...

Ashley Theophane talks US return, Ricky Burns sparring and future fights

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Treasure’ training for August 24 return Former British light-welterweight champion Ashley Theophane is aiming to put the disappointment of his loss to Darren Hamilton behind him when he makes his comeback in Charlotte, North Carolina on August 24. The 31 year-old, who has fought some of the top fighters between 140 and 154lbs, planned to take 18 months out of chasing his world title dream to win a British Lonsdale belt outright and just fell short with points defeat to Hamilton in May after making two defences. The Londoner is now returning to the US to re-establish his headline status on American soil. He fights for the 38th time in his career against an opponent yet to be named at NC Music Factory’s Reelworks Studios and is currently preparing to get back to winning ways. “Training has gone well for this fight. I've been in the gym for nearly nine weeks so I'm in great shape and ready to go,” Theophane told World Boxing News. ...
