GB Boxing caption distraught following defeat
Amateur boxer Thomas Stalker has been left reflecting on
what might have been after suffering a 23-22 loss to Munkh-Erdene Uranchimeg in
the Olympic quarter-final at the ExCeL Arena in London last night.
The 28 year-old, who was a heavy favourite to claim at medal
for the ten-strong Great British team this month, had spent the last four years
of his life aiming for one goal and had it snatched from his grasp by the
tightest of margins.
The British boxing captian is now left contemplating
sacrificing a lucrative professional career to continue on until the Rio
Olympic Games in 2016, by which time the world number one light-welterweight
will be 32.
Stalker’s Mongolian opponent may have shaded the opening
round of the bout, but it then seemed that there was no doubt that the Briton took sessions
two and three. The Huyton fighter then stormed off when hearing the decision
and has been left devastated at missing out on his dream of winning an Olympic
medal.
“(I am) Absolutely heartbroken. Those judges have wrecked my
life! From the bottom of my heart I won that fight and there's nothing I can do
about it,” tweeted Stalker.
