Although he ultimately faced another disappointment in the United States last Saturday, Michael Katsidis’ trainer Brendon Smith praised his fighter, before revealing that his charge will have some time away from the sport, before hopefully returning victorious.
The 30 year-old lost for the second time in a row in Las Vegas in another "Fight of the year" contender against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. The Aussie gave everything to the cause for the duration of the fight, which has almost become his trademark of late and is what the American public expects of “The Great”.
“It’s still too early to make any decisions,” Smith stated to finda.com.au
“The thing is Michael is fighting the best in the division. Guerrero is a two-time world champion and was the number one contender and we fought a future Hall of Fame boxer in Marquez before that.
“I think it’s important his next fight is a win, but we’ll let everything die down and then have a look at our options.
“One thing is for certain, we’d like a bit more luck. The last two camps, with Stathi passing away and then the cut, certainly haven’t been ideal.”
“Take nothing away from Guerrero. He fought brilliantly and he deserved the win,” Smith said.
“His (Michael) timing was definitely a bit out. He wasn’t able to spar and was probably a bit dusty because of it.
“But in saying that, we made the decision to go ahead with the fight, so we have to wear the decision we made.”
It may be more towards the back end of the year before Katsidis returns to action, maybe in a fight on home soil. With his record now standing at 27-4, 22 KO’s and with his stock in America as high as ever, it surely wont be too long before Katsidis graces the Las Vegas strip once more.
