WBC flyweight king ends career on low
Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, who earlier this year was acclaimed
as the ‘WBC Fighter of the Decade’ has been forced to hang up his gloves after
a devastating third round loss to unknown Rey Migreno.
The 35 year-old, who made 21 successful WBC flyweight title
defences in two spell as champion, cut a forlorn figure as Migreno
celebrated his victory and condemned him to his second stoppage defeat of the
year.
Wonjongkam had handpicked his opponents since his loss to
Sonny Boy Jaro earlier this year and went into the bout in his hometown
confident on a four-fight winning streak.
The Thai fighters demeanour meant nothing though as his body
seemed to fail him in the fight and afterwards he admitted that the decision to
extend his career lied with his manager Wirat
Wachirarattanawong.
Wachirarattanawong swiftly called a halt to his fighters
fourteen career though and stated that the time had come for Wonjongkam to
leave the sport for good after his fifth defeat in 94 contests.
