Ghanaian set to return before the end of the year
Former IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko is ready to
climb between the ropes for the first time in a year and has set his sights on
facing the best fighters at 122lbs upon his return to the ring.
The 32 year-old, who lost out to Abner Mares twice in bantamweight
unifications last year, is keen to dive straight into the bustling super-bantamweight division
and only wants the best as he looks to turn around some recent poor form.
“I hope to fight by the end of November or early December,”
Agbeko told World Boxing News. “I've set my sights on Donaire and Rigodeaux.”
Many thought that the New York-based African was ready to
retire from the sport following his losses to Mares, although Agbeko has other ideas and wants another world
title shot before he finally steps away.
“I am very strong with a lot of energy, so I believe I have
a lot more to do as far as boxing is concerned,” he stated.
“I think Leo Santa Cruz is doing a good job at 118 and Mares
is also taken care of business at 122 so I am hoping to get back in the mix myself.”
A recent split with controversial trainer Don King means
that Agbeko is currently taking care of his own affairs, but ‘King Kong’ hasn’t
ruled out linking up with another of the other top promoters.
“I can't work with Don King, but I am definitely signing
with a new promoter. At this moment I am promoting my upcoming fight by myself,
for now.
“I've also taken on a peace campaign towards Ghana's upcoming
presidential election and I am going on a nationwide tour to preach peace to
the youth,” finished Agbeko, alluring to his hopes of a second career outside
the ring.
