Mexican ready for second defence
IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz is gearing up for
the challenge of compatriot Victor Zaleta as the US-based fighter makes the second defence of his
title on November 10 in Los Angeles.
The 24 year-old, who picked up the belt in June by defeating
Vusi Malinga, finishes off a busy year with the Staples Center outing and told
WBN that his preparations have put him in top condition for the clash.
“To be a success in this business, you have to be happy in
your work,” Santa Cruz told World Boxing News.
“Have you ever had a quality fighter tell you they hate to
go to the gym? I haven't. Maybe I've known guys who don't look forward
to daily workouts but they didn't make it in our business. I'm a lucky guy. I love my job.
“ I don't want to give any secrets away but I can tell you
that I'm working like I have to fight King Kong on a ladder. I'll be ready for
anything Zaleta has to deliver on November 10.”
Santa Cruz was rather more coy when asked about the possibility
of defending his title against new mandatory challenger Jamie McDonnell and
will only think about what’s next after Zaleta.
“He's a good fighter, but I have to stay focused on November
10 and Zaleta,” he clarified.
