Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu had too much class and power for Danie Venter, winning the “Last Man Standing” cruiserweight tournament with an impressive fifth round KO of the former Olympian.
The 24-year-old southpaw was all business as he stalked Venter down. He was fast and accurate and used his powerful left to wear down the veteran.
Any hopes of the “Cinderella Man” fulfilling an unlikely dream withered in the face of Mchunu’s onslaught. Frankly, he was barely in the fight and started taking a pounding in the fourth.
The swagger of old was gone and so too was his famous power, perhaps a consequence of going into the fight with a damaged right hand.
The fifth was a disaster and three times he was dispatched to the canvas, the final time at 1:52 of the round, confirming a KO win for the champion, who had a superb tournament and looked world class throughout.
Mchunu also won the ABU title.
