Williams pulls out over money wrangle
Evander Holyfield’s December 9th WBF title defence has been called off again after opponent Sherman "The Tank" Williams asked for his purse up front and Holyfield’s promoters could not come up with the funds.
The bout should have taken place on Bonfire Night originally but was put back to November 12th before being moved again to December 9th, which prompted Williams’ manager Si Stern to ask for a purse advance.
“I asked for Sherman’s purse to be advanced because of all the postponements but that never happened,” Stern told boxnews.com.ua.
“I was told last week that the promoters again couldn’t come up with the necessary funds and that there would be no fight. All the while tickets were being sold in Detroit and advertisements were out for the new Dec 9th date.”
The bout now looks dead in the water and with Holyfield turning 48 in October, time is not on “The Real Deal’s” side as he looks to claim a version of the world title in 2011 and eventually hopes to unify the division and become the oldest world champion of all time.
