Manchester fighter suffers blow as world title shot is shown on delayed broadcast

When European welterweight champion Matthew Hatton steps into the ring at around 4am on Sunday morning, UK time, nobody in the UK will be able to see him in his quest to claim the WBC light-middleweight champion and become Britain’s fifth world title holder.

Sky TV, who usually broadcast the younger Hatton’s fights, have chosen not to broadcast the fight live, when the 29 year-old faces his toughest test yet against undefeated Mexican Saul Alvarez at the Honda Center in California and instead will show the fight delayed on Sunday evening.

It’s a huge blow for British fight fans who expected, maybe even took it for granted, that any British boxer fighting for the WBC title would be shown live, but as WBC super-middleweight champion Carl Froch has also learned in the past, its not always the case.

It now seems that you have more chance of seeing a Briton fight a Mexican in America, than you do if you actually live in Britain and I am sure the UK fight fans will vent their disappointment is Sky’s decision not to allow them to see Hatton bid for the title live.

Matthew Hatton v Saul Alvarez is live on HBO After Dark from 10.30pm ET this Saturday night.

UK viewers can see the fight on Sky Sports 2 at 6.30pm on Sunday.

The Tragedy of Billy Collins Jr.

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Collins after the fight Williams Ray Collins Jr. or Billy Collins Jr. as he became known, was born to a boxing father in Antioch, Tennessee in 1961. His father William Sr, once fought Welterweight Champion Curtis Cokes and wanted his boy to follow in his footsteps, so decided to train Billy himself. Collins Jr. turned pro in 1981, a welterweight, just like his father before him and impressively won his first 14 professional contests, 11 by knockout with eight inside the first three rounds. It was 1983 and Billy was matched up against Puerto Rican journeyman Luis Resto on the undercard of Roberto Duran v Davey Moore at Madison Square Garden in a ten rounder. Resto wasn’t known for his punching power but Billy took a sustained beating for the full ten rounds, his face, badly damaged and his eyes were almost shut. After the fight, which Resto won on decision, Billy’s father shook Resto’s hand and noticed there wasn’t much padding in his gl...

Derry Mathews willing to offer Scott Harrison title shot

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor British champion open to fight with former WBO title holder According to Scott Harrison’s manager Alex Morrison, the Scot has been offered the chance to fight British champion Derry Mathews later in the year. The possbile fight hinges on whether Mathews can come through a rematch with Gavin Rees next month at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield. Morrison is looking to fast-track his fighter to a world title shot in 2013 and sees the Lonsdale belt as an ideal stepping stone for Harrison as he makes his comeback from a seven-year absence. The 34 year-old fights Brahim Bariz in his first fight since 2005 at the end of the month at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow and wants to move as quickly as possible on to a potential shot at a world champion. Harrison held the WBO featherweight title on two occasions in the past and now campaigns at lightweight.
