Negotiations start after Angulo talks stall.
WBC Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez’s camp have started negotiation’s with Paul Williams’ team about a possible rematch at middleweight.
The first encounter last December at light-middleweight ended in a contentious points win for Williams with one judge scoring the bout a draw but the other two having it to Williams by two points and the other by an unbelievable nine point margain.
Since that December 12th bout, Martinez moved up to challenge middleweight king Kelly Pavlik for the WBC and WBO version’s of the title and came away with both belts after a uniamimous point’s victory.
Martinez had been looking to take on Mexican Alfredo “Perro” Angulo next but an offer of $750,000 to make the match was turned down by team Angulo and Martinez was forced to look at other option’s for the November date.
The Argentinian southaw now see’s the William’s rematch as a shot at redemption and an ideal opportunity to put the record straight.
For Williams, it’s look’s to be the best option after his farcical match-up with Kermit Cintron earlier in May this year when Cintron tripped and fell out of the ring, only to be too injured to continue.
The fight was halted with only three completed round’s but still went to the scorecard’s and Williams’ was announced the winner, but even before that the two fighter style’s didn’t seem to match and a rematch is highly unlikely.
Sergio Martinez v Paul Williams II will be live on HBO on November 20th
