Segura wins by KO, Maidana out-points Corley

Mexican Giovanni Segura added the WBO Light-Fylweight title to the WBA Title he already possesses with a stunning knockout over previously unbeaten Ivan Calderon on the Puerto Rican’s home soil last night.

Segura 28, now has 21 knockouts on his impressive 25-1-0 record and has beaten every man he has ever faced, including knocking out his last nine opponents with the last five coming in world title fights.

Calderon 35, who drops to 34-1-1, seemed to be in control of the fight in the early rounds, with Segura coming into the fight in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds, catching Calderon with some hurtful punches.

Calderon came back in the seventh after having to withstand a lot of punishment in the previous three rounds until in the eighth round, Segura launched a sustained attack, backing Calderon into the corner and ended the fight with a devastating body shot.

Both fighters embraced after the referee counted out Calderon, showing a mutual respect for each other, but in fairness to Segura, he never looked in danger of losing against the smaller Calderon and from the third round onwards, there only looked to be one result.

WBA Challenger: Maidana
Elsewhere in Argentina, Marcos Maidana looks to have set up a bout with Britain’s Amir Khan in December after becoming number one contender for his WBA Light-Welterweight Title by unanimously out-pointing former world champion DeMarcus Corley 117-110, 117-110, 115-112.

In a tough contest, Maidana knocked down Corley in the eight round and seemed to have him right were he wanted him but Corley showed the heart of a champion, coming back into the fight, standing and trading with Maidana without fear.

Both fighters gave their all but the younger Maidana came out on top and has put himself in place to challenge WBA holder Amir Khan on December 11th, in a bout that is scheduled to take place in the UK.

Also on the bill Jose Gonzales improved to 11-0 after knocking out another unbeaten fighter Hector Marengo in the 6th round.

Marengo had previously drawn four of his nine contests but suffered his first defeat as Gonzales controlled the fight to add an easy victory to his impressive looking record.

WBN Remembers: "Gypsy Boy" Ernie Smith

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor (picure by boxrec.com) After almost a year and a half without one of boxing’s great journeymen, World Boxing News is looking back at the 161-fight career of Worcestershire warrior Ernie Smith, concentrating on his contribution in the ring, rather than the tragic way his life ended out of it. Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie ga...

The Londoner is now returning to the US to re-establish his headline status on American soil. He fights for the 38th time in his career against an opponent yet to be named at NC Music Factory’s Reelworks Studios and is currently preparing to get back to winning ways. “Training has gone well for this fight.
