Timothy Bradley unifies titles after head clashes end bout prematurely

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Fight stopped after ten rounds as Alexander suffers cut Devon Alexander surrendered his WBC light-welterweight title to WBO champion Timothy Bradley in a scrappy affair at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan after constant head clashes caused the bout to end before the completion of the tenth round. 27 year-old Bradley started the brighter of the two, catching Alexander with solid looking shots, before Alexander, 23, came into the bout in the middle rounds as both boxers butted heads on more than one occasion and Alexander seemed to be the more affected of the two. “Desert Storm” then took control into the seventh, eighth and ninth rounds, with Alexander complaining about the cut on several instances before the doctor checked out the St Louis fighter midway through the ninth round. He then called the bout off with Alexander complaining of a burning sensation in his eye and it was declared that the tenth round would be included in the scoring. On...

The 29 year-old has since returned with a four-round KO win over Argentine Andres Pablo Villafane in October and returns to the same venue to take on former US Contender series finalist Forbes (35-8-0). Oregon-born Forbes has been in indifferent form in the past four years, since losing that Contender final via split decision against an aging Grady Brewer, which many people believe should have gone Steve's way. Forbes has lost five of his last eight, but ...

James Toney touted for boxing comeback

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor “Lights Out” could return against Reed According to fighthype.com , three-weight world champion James “ Lights Out” Toney is planning a return to the boxing ring in February after being out of the sport since September 2009, when he stopped Matthew Greer in two rounds. Toney, 42, tried his hand in MMA last year, signing a multi-fight deal in January, only to lose to two-weight UFC champion Randy Couture by submission, whilst only throwing one punch and was immediately released from his contract. It looks like the Michigan-born puncher is now ready for a return to the squared-circle after his octogon experience and has been linked to a fight with “Dangerous” Damon Reed next month, which would be his 84th career-fight as he aims for a four world title.

Hatton, 29, is the younger brother of two-time world champion Ricky, who impressed American audiences in the late 2000’s until being wiped out by pound for pound world champions Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao in bad knockout defeats. The Manchester fighter (41-4-2) now attempts to grab the US markets attention in a tough looking test against one of the hottest prospects in the boxing world at the moment. Hatton has largely stayed out of world-class in his 46 fight career and now dips his toes into the lion’s den. Distinctive looking Alvarez, who’s nickname translates as “Cinnamon” currently holds the WBC silver title at 147lbs and has already c...

The 23 year-old was speaking at the pre-fight press conference as the two champions came face to face two weeks before they meet in the ring and Alexander believes he has the tools to take Bradley’s WBO title, but dismissed a possible unification with WBA champion Amir Khan. “It is my time now and I'm going to seize the moment,” Alexander stated. “Khan is an OK fighter. He's no big deal. People are really making big hype about Amir Khan. I don't know what all the hype is about but he has a little power behind him. Broner, 21, was fighting on home soil at the Taft Masonic Temple and had the 26 year-old in trouble in the first few seconds of the bout, staggering the Louisiana-born former middleweight with a left hook, before piling on the pressure to seal his ninth first round victory. In the process, Broner picked up his second professional title by claiming the WBC USNBC lightweight title and announced his intention to challenge for a world title later this year, before jetting off to spar with Devon Alexander ahead of his unification bout with Timothy Bradley.

Sechew Powell still waiting for Bundrage

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor “Iron Horse” should be next up for K9 Despite winning two IBF light-middleweight title eliminators in the last three years, Brooklyn’s Sechew Powell is still no closer to his shot at current champion Cornelius Bundrage as he scouts for his next opponent. After defeating Terrance Cauthen in his first eliminator back in December 2007, the southpaw was hoping for a shot at Cory “Next Generation” Spinks in early 2008. Spinks had dropped back down to 154lb from a failed challenge against middleweight champion Jermain Taylor and avoided the big punching Powell in order to make a tune-up defence against Verno Phillips. A 38 year-old Phillips, with ten defeats on his record at that point, blew the fight out of the water by defeating Spinks on a split decision in Missouri, meaning Powell would now have to find another opponent and wait for his chance against Phillips. Three months later and Powell faced Deandre Latimore, a dangerous opponent with only one defeat...
