Steve Ward receives civil reception and scroll in Nottingham
European Boxing Federation Midlands cruiserweight champion
Steve Ward has been awarded with a scroll of honour at a civil reception in his
home city of Nottingham after coming out of a 23 year-old retirement to pick up
the fringe EBF title.
Ward, 55, is now officially recognised by the Guinness Book
of World Records as the current oldest boxing champion in the world after
overtaking 53 year-old Australian Dextor ‘Dingo’ Dunworth and the record holder
was thrilled to receive the honour.
"It's terrific. To think that Nottingham has done this
for me, I can't put it into words,” Ward told BBC Sport.
"My family think I'm a nutter. People all round me
weren't behind me at first, but, now, I think they believe in me."
Ward will defend his title on October 1st in Chesterfield
against Lee Renshaw as he aims to extend his record.
