Maidana’s power too much for Petrov

Champion retains title with fourth round stoppage

Hard-hitting Marcos Maidana made the first defence of his WBA light-welterweight title last night with a fourth round technical knockout of Spain-based Russian Petr Petrov in Buenos Aires.

The 28 year-old, who was due to meet Robert Guerrero last month until a serious injury ruled him out, put the brave challenger down three times in the fight before ending it with a crunching body shot in round four and the referee had seen enough.

The Argentinian moves to 31-2 with his 28th KO and may look to fight again before the New Year.

WBO #4 Orlando Cruz comes out as the first openly gay boxer in history
