‘Hayemaker’ has a reputation to rebuild
The fallout from his last foray in the boxing ring will
still be ringing in his ears as David Haye makes his ring walk to face domestic
nemesis Dereck Chisora on July 14th at Upton Park Football Stadium
in London.
The 31 year-old has had a turbulent year since his July
defeat to Wladimir Klitschko, with the now infamous ‘toe-gate’ incident, half-hearted
retirement in October and February brawl with ‘Del Boy’ damaging the Londoner’s
credibility.
So would a defeat to Chisora in the summer leave the
license-less former two-weight world champion on the scrapheap? A lot would
argue that it would and could conceivably retire Haye once again without him
having a say in the matter.
The Bermondsey fighter’s ultimate goal, as it was a year
ago, is a world title shot against a Klitschko brother and with Vitali likely to
fight just once more before retirement, Haye will need to put on an explosive
performance to stop the rugged Chisora and force the older Klitschko’s hand.
‘Dr Ironfist’ failed to produce a promised knockout in his
bout with the Finchley puncher in Munich, but may get another chance if Chisora
can upset the odds and produce a career-best win against Haye in the
controversial summer battle.
A win for Haye is still not certain to give him that shot he craves as Team Klitschko look set to dump both Briton’s from future fights with either champion, although the potential money that could be involved may change that stance.
There is no doubt that Haye has work to do to get the majority of British fight fans back onside and whether anything other than a crushing knockout win over Chisora will do it is open to debate.
