Unified belt holder says he is still champion
Lamont Peterson has responded to calls that he is a drugs
cheat by vowing to fight the allegations labelled against him and is insistant that
he remains the WBA and IBF light-welterweight champion of the world.
The 28 year-old, who’s scheduled rematch with Amir Khan was
postponed due to the positive test in March, is ready to fight his corner in
upcoming hearings with both organisations and is not ready to give up his world titles just yet.
"Let the commission decide, let the sanctioning bodies
decide. Until that point I'm still the champ,” stated Peterson.
"I just want them, the commission, to know that I
didn't intend to cheat or gain any advantage.
"At the end of the day if I cheat, I don't win and I'm
one who loves to win and I don't need nobody or anything to help me to win.
"I've never been a cheat. I don't like it when people
cheat. It's just my word but the pellets didn't do anything to help me beat
him."
Former foe Khan, 25, is now looking at alternative opponents
for a possible July 7th contest, with WBC champion Danny Garcia his
number one target and hopes to have Peterson’s belts on the line to make it a
three-belt unification.
The WBA and IBF are expected to make a ruling on
Peterson’s positive test soon and If found guilty of using performance enhancing
drugs (PEDS), it could be a long road back to another shot at the title for the
American.
