Mikey Garcia wants his world title shot in 2012

Oxnard fighter looking to the another great year

Miguel Angel ‘Mikey’ Garcia is not letting up in his pursuit of a world title after a successful 2011 in which he scored three impressive victories and a healthy rise up the world featherweight rankings.

The 24 year-old is now ranked number two by the WBC and believes that 2012 will be the year when he finally realises his dream of fighting for and winning a world belt after racking up 27 straight wins since 2006.

“I did have a good year with all three wins coming by stoppages but I think 2012 will be the year that I get a title shot,” Garcia told World Boxing News.

“If I get awarded any recognition this year for my efforts that would be great, but I would like nothing more than to get my title shot.

“It doesn’t matter which of the champions grant me the shot as long as it’s for a world title and I think that by end of next year, I will be rated as the best featherweight in the world.”

Garcia may only be only fight away from a chance to claim the WBC title with champion Jhonny Gonzalez set to meet former title holder Elio Rojas in March and Garcia could be in line to meet the winner.

WBN Remembers: "Gypsy Boy" Ernie Smith

Jay WBN Editor  (picure by boxrec.com)  After almost a year and a half without one of boxing’s great journeymen, World Boxing News is looking back at the 161-fight career of Worcestershire warrior Ernie Smith, concentrating on his contribution in the ring, rather than the tragic way his life ended out of it. Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds.
