No repeat as Marquez finishes Concepcion in round one

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Tyson’ makes successful second title defence Hernan ‘Tyson’ Marquez stunned Luis Concepcion along with a packed crowd the Centro de Usos Multiples in Sonora as he put the former champion down three times in the first round to retain his WBA flyweight title. The fight was taking to same shape as their ‘Fight of the Year’ contender in April this year in the first minute until a beautiful combination by the 23 year-old champion rocked the Panamanian challenger and ‘El Nica’ never fully recovered. Marquez followed up the one two with another, putting Concepcion the floor from which bounced straight back to his feet and may have been more wise to have taken some time to clear his head. The Mexican sensed his opportunity, pouncing straight on him and due to his warrior spirit, Concepcion wanted to fire back and with his head still cloudy, touched down again close to the ropes. The end came shortly after as a short left hand laid the 26 y...

Jermain Taylor rescheduled to return on December 30

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor ‘Bad Intentions’ back down to middleweight Former world middleweight king Jermain Taylor (28-4-1, 17 KO’s) returns to his old weight after a disastrous spell at 168lbs on December 30 th in his home town of Little Rock, Arkansas. The 33 year-old had originally planned to make his comeback following a two-year semi-retirement in August but after concerns about his weight, the former Super-Six participant was forced to postpone and convince the boxing board otherwise. ‘Bad Intentions’ is now pencilled in to fight at the Verizon Arena against an as yet un-named opponent at 160lbs and hopes to rebuild his reputation after a series of bad performances led to concerns about his health. Taylor has had brain problems in the past but was given the green light to resume his career after extensive tests and with all four of his losses coming in his last five contests, the former champion has a lot to prove to his doubters. .

Rugby Star Jonah Lomu forced to quit boxing dream

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Illness forces the ‘Big Man’ to cancel fight plans Rugby Union superstar Jonah Lomu has been forced to cancel an upcoming charity boxing match after his kidney condition worsened in the run up to his December bout at the ‘Fight for Life’ event. The 36 year-old, who was diagnosed with a kidney disorder in 1995 and forced to undergo a life-saving operation in 2004, had always dreamed of being a boxer but has now had to give up a fight career on doctors’ advice. The New Zealander’s punishing training regime is thought to have contributed to a two-week stay in hospital for the former All Black in September and Lomu has now decided against continuing with the contest.

Donaire takes every round from Narvaez in final fight at 118lbs

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Filipino fails to ‘Flash’ at the MSG Theater WBC and WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire inflicted the first defeat on two-weight world champion Omar Narvaez last night in what turned out to be one of the Filipino’s less dazzling performances as he found it tough to penetrate the Argentinian’s tight defence. The 28 year-old, who moves up to 122lbs for his next bout, looked for angles constantly in a vain attempt to stop the rugged super-flyweight champion but eventually took a landslide points win on all three cards. The action heated up in the tenth as Donaire reacted to the boos from the lack of action but the contest reverted straight back in the eleventh to the almost 5,000 capacity crowd’s dismay. The ‘Filipino Flash’ had hoped to wow the crowd in his last fight at the weight after eight months out of the ring but had to settle for a 120-108 score on all the cards as Narvaez seemed intent with taking Donaire the distance. ...

Lighter than light: Donaire weight issues just over-sweating says trainer

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Filipino Flash’ set to move up but can’t make 118lbs Usually when a fighter is moving up in divisions and fighting in his final bout at his current weight, you would expect him to be bang on the limit in readiness to hit the next class. WBC and WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire though, came in at just over 116lbs for his last contest at 118lbs as he takes on former flyweight and super-flyweight world champion Omar Narvaez. Even Narvaez came in a pound about the Filipino and he has been campaigning at 115lbs for almost two years. In his previous two bantawweaight fights Donaire has come in bang on the limit and it was assumed that he would once again be tight at the weight and it was a huge surprise to see the reading come back as 116.25lbs last night. The 28 year-old did spend a lengthy spell out of the ring before announcing his defence against the Argentinian and has now been out for a total of eight months, although his trainer R...

Hopkins v Dawson should have been a no contest - Theophane

Ashley Theophane The world’s two top light-heavyweights went at it in Los Angeles at the weekend. The ever young, 46 year old, Bernard ‘The Executioner’ Hopkins defended his world title against ‘Bad’ Chad Dawson. A few years ago, Chad Dawson looked like he could be a huge future star of boxing but struggled to beat Glen Johnson and a surprise points loss to Jean Pascal, took the shine off him. Ring Legends, Roy Jones Jnr. and James Toney both thought Bernard only wanted Chad Dawson as he has looked mentally weak in some of his recent fights. Bernard is a master of pre-fight ‘mind games’, as demonstrated in his recent lopsided points win against Jean Pascal. Jean was totally intimidated and showed far too much respect, as he had been led to believe that he was fighting a living legend. Chad Dawson was not in the least bit intimidated by Bernard. He showed admirable focus and maturity going into their bout. He pushed Hopkins backwards for two rounds, until the pair got tangl...

Cleverly fought Bellew for twelve rounds with cracked rib

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Welshman never contemplated pulling out of WBO defence World light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly has revealed that an injury to his ribs suffered in sparring hampered his performance against arch-rival Tony Bellew last Saturday and if targeted, could have cost him his WBO belt. The 24 year-old, who came through the rugged Scouser on a majority decision at the Echo Arena, revealed the injury to fledging boxing channel BoxNation and admitted that he took a gamble with his world title status on the night. “We had top keep it majorly quiet,” explained the Cefn Forest fighter. “I did it when I was training in London two weeks before the fight. I did six rounds with George Groves and then another six with Chris Eubanks’ boy and in the 11th he caught me on the back and cracked a rib. “I finished off the 12 rounds and didn’t show any pain, but I had a week of sparring back home planned with Sam Sexton, a heavyweight, which I had to ...

Chad Dawson becomes WBC champion with foul move

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Rematch on the cards after Hopkins ruled out injured Bernard Hopkins’ first defence of the WBC light-heavyweight title descended into farce at The Staples Center in Los Angeles after challenger Chad Dawson, 29, picked up the elder champion in the second round causing him to fall awkwardly onto the ring apron and damage his shoulder. The incident followed a cagey opening round and amazingly referee Pat Russell failed to rule what looked like a wrestling move a foul. After much deliberation and confusion, the bout was called a technical knockout and Dawson picked up the green belt to the amazement of the Californian crowd. 46 year-old Hopkins looked stunned as the decision was read out and called for a rematch with the new champion who announced that he would now target Jean Pascal to avenge his only loss. “Of course he was faking it,” stated Dawson. “He fell on his back, how did he hurt his shoulder?” “I want Pascal. He’ll be 47 by t...

Linares bloodied and beaten after schooling DeMarco

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Mexican claims WBC lightweight belt Jorge Linares produced a superb performance and looked on his way to a third world title at a third weight until cuts on the bridge of his nose and eye opened up to hamper his world title challenge. I had the Japan-based Venezuelan up 97-93 going into the eleventh round as ‘El Nino de Oro’ used his lateral movement to bamboozle DeMarco, who just wanted to get Linares embroiled into a toe-to-toe battle. From the sixth round onwards the Tijuana fighter’s tactics worked and the more the boxer’s traded, the worse off Linares looked and in the end the referee had no choice but to step in with blood pouring from Linares’ face. Also on the card at The Staples Center, Danny Garcia improved to 22-0 with a split decision win over Kendall Holt. The bout was close for the first five or six rounds, after which, Garcia took control and Holt hardly landed a telling punch. The judges’ scorecards read 117-111 (tw...

The former MMA star took less than two minutes to wipe-out Tay Bledsoe at the Heartlands Center and keeps up his impressive start to his pugilistic career. Dewey Bozella, 52, scores win, inspires De La Hoya to want comeback

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Wrongly-convicted fighter in long-awaited pro debut Former Amateur boxer Dewey Bozella finally realised his dream tonight as he turned professional at the ripe old age of 52, scoring a four-round victory over Larry Hopkins at The Staples Center in Los Angeles. Bozella, who wrongly spent 26 years in prison before being released from Sing Sing in 2009, looked a little nervous as the first bell went but soon found a rhythm to out-work the 30 year-old Hopkins and take a points win on all three cards. After the fight, former multi-weight world champion Oscar De La Hoya, who is head of Golden Boy Boxing, Bozella’s promoters, tweeted; “Bozella wins and has inspired me to make a comeback!” after watching the inspirational figure in action, which may have been more than a little tongue in cheek.
