‘Treasure’ outlines his future plans
British light-welterweight champion Ashley Theophane has
always been focused on achieving his goals and has now mapped out his plan for
multi-weight world titles by the end of his career, which may be in 2016.
The 31 year-old explained to World Boxing News that his
current status as the Lonsdale Belt holder is a temporary measure whilst the
US-based Brit claims the belt for keeps before moving on to a world title.
“By 2013, I expect to be campaigning at 147lbs,” Theophane
told World Boxing News.
“That gives me the whole of 2012 to win my Lonsdale Belt
outright, with two more defences and then challenging for a world title.
“I hope to defend it once before the end of 2012 and that’s
how my next four fights would go, if it was up to me.”
The ‘Treasure’ would then not hang around being content with
being a world champion and would immediately look to move up to welterweight
where there are a host of big-name fighters currently competing.
“147lbs should be alive and kicking by 2013,” he explained.
“I would love to fight Andre Berto or Victor Ortiz and get comfortable at the
weight for a couple of years.
“By 2015, I should be up at 154lbs where a fight with Miguel
Cotto would seal my career if it could come off.
“When I hit the big fights, I want to fight the best," he went on. Campaigning in America like what Lloyd Honeygan and Ricky Hatton did in the
past and what Amir Khan is doing now is my aim and I will start my journey once
the British title is mine for keeps.”
