‘Kirkdale Kid’ to give boxing another shot
Prizefighter semi-finalist Joe Ainscough has had a change of
heart about backing away from boxing despite announcing his retirement to World
Boxing News in March this year.
The 32 year-old made a successful comeback from a
life-threatening knife wound to compete and win in the Prizefighter
super-middleweight tournament earlier this year before a defeat to Rocky
Fielding end his competition.
The Liverpudlian has now decided to continue boxing after
six months away and has been keeping fit alongside heavyweight David Price, who
tops the bill on November 19th at the Olympia.
Promoter Frank Maloney has now promised Ainscough a spot on
the Liverpool card and the former ABA champion has set his sights on some huge
all-Merseyside clashes in the future.
“I wasn’t at my best in Prizefighter, I only had five weeks
to train and had to lose a lot of weight in that time,” Ainscough told The
Liverpool Echo.
“Since I retired I’ve stayed in the gym and am only 12 stone
10 pounds now. I’m in a lot better shape now than I was for Prizefighter, it
was all about taking the opportunity when it was there.
“I feel strong and fit so think I may as well have a few
fights while I still can. I’ll then see where it takes me.
“There are a few good fights out there with people like Carl
Dilks and Tony Quigley for example. And maybe Rocky as well. Take nothing away
from his performance that night but when you’ve suffered a defeat you always
want that chance to avenge it.”
