Cleverly and Bellew Liverpool grudge-match draws closer

Nathan Cleverly 22-0 (11 KO's) is preparing for the fight of his life when he meets bitter rival Tony Bellew 16-0 (10) in Liverpool tonight.
The WBO World Light-Heavyweight champion is fully focussed on overcoming challenger Bellew in front of the scouser's home crowd at Liverpool's Echo Arena, LIVE and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Platform Ch. 456).
Cleverly and Bellew were set to meet last May, the Wavertree fighter was a late replacement for Juergen Braehmer at the O2 event but was unable to make the weight in time. A fiery exchange at the press conference between the two made the fight inevitable.
Bellew out-boxed Ovill McKenzie in his last outing which set up the mouth-watering showdown, there have been a number of dramatic moments leading up to the fight including last month's press conference in Cardiff when police were called to break it up.
Cleverly says he is preparing for the toughest fight of his career, "I am hoping for a comfortable victory but I am preparing for the fight of my life. It is not a foregone conclusion. I am focussing on going out there and putting on a very solid performance"
Bellew last fought in July when he scored a points victory over McKenzie which drew a very different approach from the 'Bomber', the 24-year-old has vowed to be ready for anything Bellew brings, "I don't care whether he boxes or fights. I am not bothered. I will be ready for whatever. I have the ability to adapt to anything he throws at me."
The unbeaten Welshman makes the second defence of his WBO belt having successfully negotiated the first with a fourth round knockout against Aleksy Kuziemski, after being declared the WBO world champion when Braehmer failed to arrive in England only three days before his clash with Cleverly.
Many see Cleverly as a clear favourite but he is not going into the grudge match with that mindset, "He is potentially the hardest opponent I have faced. I have fought some very good boxers though. He is hungry and he is preparing well. My mindset is that I am going in to a hard fight no matter how it looks on paper. We are two unbeaten British fighters in the same weight division and both hungry to win, but I'm going to show that I want it more."
Cleverly is ready for the biggest fight of his career as he puts together the final touches back in his hometown of Ceffn Fforest after a successful training camp, "Training has gone well, I went down to London for a couple of weeks and did some good quality sparring. I am now back home up until next Saturday."
The all-British dust-up will be the biggest fight to date on new boxing channel BoxNation and Cleverly is excited for the future of the UK's first dedicated fight channel, "I am very excited to be fighting onBoxNation. It was a fantastic debut there were some small fights but they turned out to be classics. I enjoyed it not just because I am a boxer but as a fan. It has a bright future and there is more to come I am pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of it."
Pride, unbeaten records, a world title and a potential fight against the legendary Bernard Hopkins, who's title defence against Chad Dawson will be televised live on BoxNation after Cleverly-Bellew, are all at stake in the unmissable contest.
If the build-up is anything to go, it should be another explosive fight on BoxNation.

The Tragedy of Billy Collins Jr.

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Collins after the fight Williams Ray Collins Jr. or Billy Collins Jr. as he became known, was born to a boxing father in Antioch, Tennessee in 1961. His father William Sr, once fought Welterweight Champion Curtis Cokes and wanted his boy to follow in his footsteps, so decided to train Billy himself. Collins Jr. turned pro in 1981, a welterweight, just like his father before him and impressively won his first 14 professional contests, 11 by knockout with eight inside the first three rounds. It was 1983 and Billy was matched up against Puerto Rican journeyman Luis Resto on the undercard of Roberto Duran v Davey Moore at Madison Square Garden in a ten rounder. Resto wasn’t known for his punching power but Billy took a sustained beating for the full ten rounds, his face, badly damaged and his eyes were almost shut. After the fight, which Resto won on decision, Billy’s father shook Resto’s hand and noticed there wasn’t much padding in his gl...

Rico Ramos captures world super- bantamweight title with KO

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor ‘Suavecito’ scores 20th straight win over Shimoda Undefeated Californian Rico Ramos produced a world-class left hand in the seventh round of his WBA title challenge against Japan’s Akifumi Shimoda to rip the belt away from the older southpaw in his first defence. The 24 year-old looked far from a world champion in the first five rounds, only gaining a foothold in the fight in round six, but ultimately produced the equalizer in the seventh to take the crown. Shimoda, 26, will be furious with himself as he bossed the majority of the fight and was up five rounds to one on my card going into the seventh round. One lapse in concentration with only thirty seconds left in round seven and Shimoda hit the canvas. The champion tried to get up at the count of nine, but stumbled over and the referee counted him out. The now former champion stayed down for a full minute before being helped to his feet and realising he no longer held the WBA belt. Also on the card i...

Private invegstigator: Arturo Gatti death clearly not suicide

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor An investigator hired by boxing legend Arturo Gatti’s manager Pat Lynch have given his verdict after a thorough investigation into the death of the two-weight world champion, who died in Brazil in 2009. Chicago-based P.I Paul Ciolino has put his findings into a detailed report, which will be released on August 30 th , but gave his opinion to New Jesery-based newspaper The Jersey Journal  after a ten-month operation. Gatti died aged 37 whilst on holiday with his wife Amanda Rodrigues and his young son in north east Brazil and after an investigation by the Brazilian authorities was deemed a suicide. Brazilian police had said that the exciting prize fighter was drunk and depressed and used his wife’s purse strap to hang himself whilst his wife and son slept upstairs, which Ciolino totally disagrees with. "I think that when we get done with the press conference it will be pretty clear it was not a suicide,"  Ciolino told The Journal. ...
