‘Kid Chocolate’ gunning for middleweight champions

Undefeated Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin is ready to realise his dream this year and become the world middleweight champion after racking up 26 straight victories with 20 knockouts.

The 28 year-old told WBN that his 2011 Twitter feud with former Contender star Ishe Smith was now a thing of the past and he is moving forward towards facing one of the middleweight title holders in the near future.

Asked whether he would entertain the prospect of facing a rejuvenated Smith, who has recently signed a three-fight deal with Prizefight Promotions, Quillin told World Boxing News: "Only if he goes and wins a big fight.

“I am not stepping down (a level) to fight a guy like Ishe Smith. I'm looking to fight champions or guys who have fought world champions. Who has Ishe fought? Only prospects and I'm past being a prospect. I'm a contender now.

"I don't have a aproblem with Ishe. I saw him in Vegas and introduced myself. All he said was hello and the guy with him did a lot of talking. Then Ishe goes on the Internet and starts calling me out behind the scenes."

Michigan-born Quillin is thought to be only one or two fights away from challenging the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez and is expected to return in the spring before an assault on a world title or title eliminator.

"Of course I want that world title this year, that's what I've been fighting for my whole career,” explained Quillin.

“2012 is the year I'm going to win a world title. I don't make fights - Golden Boy does, but I'm willing to fight any of the world champions," he added.

Quillin’s last performance was stopping Scotsman Craig McEwan in what some people in boxing saw as a premature stoppage by referee Manolo Alcocer. The American was comfortably  in front on the cards though and on his way to a victory anyway, winning every round.

The WBC have surprisingly only ranked Quillin at number 15 in their recently released rankings and the fighter will be looking at some of the top 10 ranked boxer’s for his next test.

The likes of Darren Barker (10), Billi Godoy (4) and Matthew Macklin (3) will surely be in New York-based Quillin’s sights for 2012 as the stylish 160lber continues his inevitable ride to a world title challenge.

WBN Remembers: "Gypsy Boy" Ernie Smith

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor (picure by boxrec.com) After almost a year and a half without one of boxing’s great journeymen, World Boxing News is looking back at the 161-fight career of Worcestershire warrior Ernie Smith, concentrating on his contribution in the ring, rather than the tragic way his life ended out of it. Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie ga...

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Treasure’ training for August 24 return Former British light-welterweight champion Ashley Theophane is aiming to put the disappointment of his loss to Darren Hamilton behind him when he makes his comeback in Charlotte, North Carolina on August 24. The 31 year-old, who has fought some of the top fighters between 140 and 154lbs, planned to take 18 months out of chasing his world title dream to win a British Lonsdale belt outright and just fell short with points defeat to Hamilton in May after making two defences. The Londoner is now returning to the US to re-establish his headline status on American soil. He fights for the 38th time in his career against an opponent yet to be named at NC Music Factory’s Reelworks Studios and is currently preparing to get back to winning ways. “Training has gone well for this fight. I've been in the gym for nearly nine weeks so I'm in great shape and ready to go,” Theophane told World Boxing News. ...
