‘The Knock-out King’ set for fifth world title challenge

Welterweight veteran Randall Bailey has told WBN that his speculated IBF welterweight title fight against unbeaten Mike Jones should happen in the spring following talk that the number one and two with the IBF would be paired after Andre Berto relinquished the title.

The 37 year-old former WBO light-welterweight champion has accumulated 50-fights in a career spanning almost 16-years, holding the title between 1999 and 2000 - before suffering losses to DeMarcus Corley, Miguel Cotto and Juan Urango in failed attempts to regain the world crown.

The American’s last attempt was in 2009 and since then, ‘The Knock-out King’ has put three wins together. Bailey will look to inflict Jones’s first defeat in 27 contests when the two meet in the coming months and may well see this as his final chance to be a world champion again.

“The bout is going to happen sometime in April for sure,” Bailey told World Boxing News.

“It will be for the IBF welterweight belt and should be a great fight while it lasts.”

Jones, 28, scored a landslide victory in his IBF eliminator last month on the undercard of Miguel Cotto v Antonio Margarito II against Sebastian Lujan and looked impressive in defending his NABA and WBO NABO titles in New York.

His father William Sr, once fought Welterweight Champion Curtis Cokes and wanted his boy to follow in his footsteps, so decided to train Billy himself. Collins Jr. turned pro in 1981, a welterweight, just like his father before him and impressively won his first 14 professional contests, 11 by knockout with eight inside the first three rounds. It was 1983 and Billy was matched up against Puerto Rican journeyman Luis Resto on the undercard of Roberto Duran v Davey Moore at Madison Square Garden in a ten rounder. Resto wasn’t known for his punching power but Billy took a sustained beating for the full ten rounds, his face, badly damaged and his eyes were almost shut. After the fight, which Resto won on decision, Billy’s father shook Resto’s hand and noticed there wasn’t much padding in his gl...

The possbile fight hinges on whether Mathews can come through a rematch with Gavin Rees next month at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield.
