Steve Forbes reacts to UK fight cancellation

Former world champion will continue training

With his British fight debut in tatters, one-time IBF super-featherweight champion Steve ‘2 Pound’ Forbes has spoken to World Boxing News to express his disappointment that the fight in Liverpool will no longer take place.

The 34 year-old American was due to face Ryan Barrett over eight rounds at the welterweight limit on January 20th until the bout was pulled from the show and Forbes now plans to stay in the gym until a fight opportunity arises.

“I don't know what happened to be honest,” Forbes told World Boxing News.

“I know the beautiful, loyal UK boxing fans (whom I think are the greatest fans by the way) we're buying up tickets to see old Forbsie lace them up again and show some good boxing skills.

“I'm okay with it (the cancellation). Stranger things in boxing and my career have happened.

“I will continue to train here at the Kronk Gym in Detroit where this gym is known for resurrecting guys and hopefully in February, something will open up.

“I appreciate the fan and media support though and its an honour to be thought of in such a light by fans so until the next time happy new year.

Word is still yet to come out from Vaughan Promotions about the withdrawal of the clash with top of the bill Derry Mathews still fighting for the IBO lightweight title and as soon as we get the news, we will share it with all our readers.

Jay WBN Editor ‘Suavecito’ scores 20th straight win over Shimoda Undefeated Californian Rico Ramos produced a world-class left hand in the seventh round of his WBA title challenge against Japan’s Akifumi Shimoda to rip the belt away from the older southpaw in his first defence. The 24 year-old looked far from a world champion in the first five rounds, only gaining a foothold in the fight in round six, but ultimately produced the equalizer in the seventh to take the crown. Shimoda, 26, will be furious with himself as he bossed the majority of the fight and was up five rounds to one on my card going into the seventh round.
