Hatton sees wide points decision

Former world welterweight champion Ricky Hatton is predicting a lopsided points win for Floyd Mayweather if the WBC champion he shares the ring with his number one rival and WBO title holder Manny Pacquiao in the future.

Hatton, 33, who fought both fighters before retiring from boxing, sees the slicker Mayweather coming through against Pacquiao’s all-action style in a fight that he believes wouldn’t live up to the hype.

“I thought Manny had problems with Marquez’s style and maybe he would always have problems with that style,” Hatton told The Telegraph.

“Pacquiao is a pure fighter. On the strength of that contest and performance, it is hard to see how Manny would beat Floyd Mayweather if they actually ever meet in a ring."

"I know people really talk that fight up, and are really excited about it happening, but I actually think that though people are talking about it as one of the biggest fights of all time, it could actually be an anti-climax because it could be a wide points decision for Floyd over Manny.”

34 year-old Mayweather has booked May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for what he hopes will be a unification battle with Pacquiao, 32, and is hoping to start negotiations with Bob Arum in the near future if blood test stipulations are met.

Arum has so far brushed off the possible date as he has a range of other dates and venues earmarked for the potential super-fight and would also like to negotiate a deal in private after the release made by Mayweather’s team.

Collins Jr. turned pro in 1981, a welterweight, just like his father before him and impressively won his first 14 professional contests, 11 by knockout with eight inside the first three rounds. It was 1983 and Billy was matched up against Puerto Rican journeyman Luis Resto on the undercard of Roberto Duran v Davey Moore at Madison Square Garden in a ten rounder. Resto wasn’t known for his punching power but Billy took a sustained beating for the full ten rounds, his face, badly damaged and his eyes were almost shut. After the fight, which Resto won on decision, Billy’s father shook Resto’s hand and noticed there wasn’t much padding in his gl...
