Prospect defeats Canadian champion
Britain’s number one heavyweight Tyson Fury scored his 17th
professional victory in a three-round brawl with Neven Pajkic at Event City in
Manchester to retain his Commonwealth title.
The 23 year-old didn’t have it all his own way though as the
Canadian champion caught him with a powerful shot in the second round, putting
him down for the first time in his career and threatening his unbeaten record.
Loooking visibly annoyed with himself, Fury came out for the
third with a renewed vigour and began landing some heavy shots which had Pajkic
in trouble early in the round.
‘No Surrender’ was eventually put on the floor from a
three-punch combination by the double champion and after a second knockdown the
writing was on the wall for Pajkic, 34.
Referee Marcus McDonnell stepped in to stop the bout when
the challenger was in trouble for a third time in what looked to be a premature
stoppage with Pajkic willing to continue.
Fury claimed his 12th knockout win and will now
move on to a possible American debut in March but may have to make the first
defence of his British title before then to keep hold of the coveted Lonsdale
belt.
