Marquez may price himself out of fifth Pacquiao fight

Nick Giongco The handwriting is on the wall.  Juan Manuel Marquez is starting to let Manny Pacquiao know and feel that he won’t settle for crumbs in the event they face each other for the fifth time in September. A report from Mexico said that Marquez has been offered a juicy $15 million purse to bring his act to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates to fight an obscure South African. Although the offer is not being given much thought, the message Team Marquez wants to relay is loud and clear: Pacquiao has to agree to some sort of a salary cut and for Marquez to get a bigger slice of the pie for the blockbuster fight to take place. In knocking out Pacquiao last year, Marquez was paid $6 million, while Pacquiao got $23 million. Now that he is on top of the world, Marquez believes he can somehow dictate what he wants since Pacquiao is more than eager to exact payback. Even Pacquiao lawyer Franklin Gacal admitted a few weeks ago that for the Filipino pride to get the oppo...

Mosley concurs with Malignaggi: Title fight not a done deal

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor ‘Sugar’ Shane confirms negotiations ongoing Three-weight world champion Shane Mosley has backed up what WBA welterweight champion Paul Malignaggi stated to WBN yesterday – that reports of a fight between the pair being signed and sealed are far from accurate. The returning Mosley, who initially announced his retirement on the back of a loss to Saul Alvarez in May of last year, was asked whether his portion of any protracted deal was official and the American was forthcoming in his response this afternoon. “Nothing is signed yet. Maybe Golden Boy Promotions and him have more negotiating to do on their part,” Mosley told World Boxing News. Mosley, 41, will participate in a 23rd career world title contest if the deal can be agreed, with a stipulated date of April 27 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York the target for the high-profile world title clash. Two-weight title holder Malignaggi had been expecting to face British legend Ri...

The winner of Thompson and Hunt’s opening quarter-final will face either Welshman Dale Evans or 19 year old Sam Eggington in the first semi-final – the youngest ever boxer in Prizefighter. The third quarter-final pits Chad Gaynor against Calum Cooper and they box for the right to face either Steven Pearce or Glenn Foot in the second semi-final. Britain’s hottest young star Kal Yafai faces Mexican Gonzalo Garcia in an eight-round clash in between the semi-finals of Prizefighter. VI...

Sakio Bika: Green belt is a huge opportunity

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Former IBO champion earns another title chance Four-time world title challenger Sakio Bika is delighted to have secured a second shot at the WBC super-middleweight title and knows he faces a strong opponent in the undefeated Montenegrin Nikola Sjekloca on February 16. ‘The Scorpion’ has been handed the coveted opportunity after Andre Ward was bumped up to ‘Emeritus champion’ following shoulder surgery and believes that the WBC were correct in pitting the two together for the Atlantic City clash. “This fight came about due to our rankings,” Bika explained to World Boxing News. “Sjekloca was number one and I was number two last year in the WBC so it was the obvious choice. “I know he has good boxer as he has never lost. He’s bringing a good record and a winning mentality and I look forward to a great fight. “This is a huge opportunity for me and you can’t ask for a better. It’s the WBC title, the green belt and I am getting my body in ...

Rees v Broner in Atlantic City

While Atlantic City may not possess the worldwide reputation for gambling fun that Vegas does, it’s still a top tourist resort for those on the east coast of the States – and February 16 looks set to attract a fair few more punters eager to see the rising star of US boxing. Adrien Broner has been hailed by many as the new Floyd Mayweather; he’s the current and undefeated WBC lightweight champion of the world and has won 21 of his 25 matches by knockout. His next opponent, Welshman Gavin Rees, is nine years Broner’s senior – but in the best shape of his life; perhaps the experience will give the challenger an edge found lacking in Broner’s most recent opponents. Having dropped his world light-welterweight championship at the first time of asking in 2009, Rees really came to the attention of the international boxing community when he became the first ever former world champion to enter Sky Sports’ Prizefighter competition. He took the plaudits by defeating three former European champi...

50 year-old Weinman continues comeback on Saturday

50 year -old light-middleweight boxer Mark Weinman made boxing history this past September in Tampa when he KO'd Elvis Martinez in the second round after a 21-year absence from the ring - a record for the longest time between fights for a professional boxer.   Weinman known as "The Hammer" was a highly touted 154lber fighting out of New York in the mid to late 80's winning his first 11 bouts with 9 ko's and displaying a Mike Tyson-like furious attack.  He then lost his next 2 bouts after suffering weight problems and sickness in the ring and retired in 1987.   An attempted comeback 4 years later in 1991 again ended in disappointment as Weinman was stopped while still on his feet. Weinman  had an impressive amateur background winning the Spanish Golden Gloves in New York, a three time PAL champion and New York Golden Gloves finalist.  The New York fight guys in-the-know had predicted Weinman as a future world champio...

Picture: Team Sauerland Bad luck for Yoan Pablo Hernandez (27-1, 13 KOs): The IBF World Champion broke his left hand during a sparring session ahead of his upcoming fight on February 2.  Hernandez was set to defend his title against Eric Fields (21-1, 15 KOs) at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany as part of the show topped by the European Light Heavyweight Championship between Eduard Gutknecht (24-1, 9 KOs) and Juergen Braehmer (38-2, 30 KOs), which will still go ahead as planned.  Frederick Ness, Managing Director of Sauerland Event said: "We will stand by Pablo and will make sure that he receives the best medical attention out there. We are all hoping that he gets back as soon as possible."  Unfortunately for Hernandez, this is not the first time that his left hand is a cause for concern. Campillo: Kovalev not in my class

Former WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo, 21-4-1, 7 KOs, is ready for his return to the ring after a layoff of almost one year. He fights undefeated power puncher Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev, 18-0-1, 15 KOs, in an anticipated 10-rounder at the Mohegan Sun Casino on Saturday, January 19th. The fight is the feature bout in the season opener of NBC Sports Network's popular FIGHT NIGHT  boxing series. The telecast will begin at 9PM ET with the Elvin Ayala vs. Curtis Stevens co-feature. The last time Campillo fought, February 18, 2012, he thought that he had once again become a world champion. However, after 12 rounds with IBF champ Tavoris Cloud, Campillo found himself on the short end of a controversial split decision. Cloud retained his title and sent Campillo back to the drawing board. However, the fans remained on Campillo's side. "Ever since February 12th, I hear a couple of times each day from the people that I deserved that decision," C...

Lindsay bringing A-game for Selby

Martin Lindsay is desperate to get at Lee Selby as they finally meet for the British featherweight title in Betfair’s ‘Unfinished Business’ at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on February 9, live on Sky Sports. The pair were due to meet on the undercard of Carl Frampton’s clash with Steve Molitor in September but Selby was forced to pull out on the morning of the fight after falling ill overnight. Lindsay did box on the night against lightweight Renald Garrido, overcoming the disappointment to get eight rounds under his belt against the tough Frenchman. They were valuable rounds for the 30 year old who feels ready to rip the title from Selby to make up for the frustration of the autumn. “I was extremely disappointed that the last one had to be cancelled but he was sick and there is nothing you can do about that,” said Lindsay. “I got offered an alternative fight that night and I took it because I had sold a lot of tickets. “This fight has been in the pipeline sinc...

Bernard Hopkins v Tavoris Cloud press conference quotes

Bernard Hopkins, Three-Time And Two-Division World Champion & Oldest Fighter In History To Win A World Championship: "Age is not an enemy to me.  The clock is not something to try to stop.  The man upstairs can't even do that.  You can get the daylight to be earlier or the darkness to be later, but the clock has to move forward. "People will always tell me, 'You can't do this.  You can't do that.'  When I hear that, it gives me motivation.  I know there are some things in life that are out of reach.  Some people are not capable of doing certain things.  I have been doing this half of my life.  I know what I am capable of.     "Some people are trying to write my destiny, but when you see a guy that has a track record that has proven to be more right than wrong over 28 years, Cloud has to say that he has a challenge.  In reality, he is going to have to train harder than he ever has before. "[To Cl...
