Ivan ‘Terrible II’ Morales planning for world title in 2013

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Unbeaten super-flyweight now 16-0 Ivan Morales is set to return to the ring in the spring after fighting eight times in the previous twelve months. The younger brother of WBC 140lb champion Erik Morales has bulked up his impressive 16-fight unblemished record and plans a raid on the world title in the next twelve. The 20 year-old, who has eleven stoppages since turning pro in 2009, is now eyeing a world title shot in 2013 after another busy year in 2012 and has two options for his 17 th outing with the first a possible US debut. “My next fight is to be March 24 in Houston or the 31st in Cancun,” Morales told World Boxing News. “I will soon be looking to fight for the super-flyweight title and want this match in September 2013. “I want to fight with the champions. Omar Narvaez, Juan Carlos Sánchez Jr it makes no difference. For me the name not is important only the titles.” The young Mexican may well fight on his sibling's underc

Pawel Wolak reveals options: Sensible Top Rank fight or MMA

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Recently retired fighter may box on…for now Pawel Wolak has explained to WBN what his plans are for 2012 after announcing his retirement following his loss to rival Delvin Rodriguez in December at Madison Square Garden. The 31 year-old is currently intent on beginning training for a career in Mixed Martial Arts, although the ‘Raging Bull’ is still contracted to previous employers Top Rank until October this year and could be set for one last fight before swapping the prizefighting ring for the octagon. “There are basically three options,” Wolak told World Boxing News. “Top Rank accepts my request to let me out of my contract early and I go into MMA and have my first fight this summer or Top Rank asks me to fulfil my contract obligations and gives me an opponent and opportunity that makes sense and I will honour my contract. "The third option is Top Rank asks me to fulfil my contract obligations and gives me something that makes no s

Chisora WBC ban makes no sense

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Del Boy’ given harsh treatment The WBC have moved to ban British heavyweight Dereck Chisora from fighting for their title until he completes and anger management course, whilst they keep jail-pending champion Floyd Mayweather as their welterweight title holder. Chisora, 28, was already fined by the WBC for his actions against Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, along with brawling in the media room post-fight with David Haye - for which he was questioned by police and released without charge. I think it is a bit hypocritical for the body to ban Chisora and then act ten days after the fight when the sensationalism has died down. Their actions have only added more fuel to the fire and kept the stories running in my view whilst labelling the Briton for the ‘worst behaviour’ ever seen in a WBC title fight. Vitali Klitschko was already planning to dish out his own means of punishment with a knockout win in a rematch but the WBC’s sanctions may now ha

Unbeaten Chris Evangelou eyeing titles this year

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘The Flash’ has Southern Area belt in sights Enfield light-welterweight Chris Evangelou enjoyed an impressive 2011, scoring four victories in the calendar year and improving his record to 9-0 in the process . The 26 year-old, who’s older brother Andreas is also an undefeated pro fighter, has now set his sights on a shot at Darren Hamilton’s Southern Area belt as he looks to crack the British Top 10 in 2012. “I am looking at getting my name into the top 10 as soon as possible,” Evangelou told World Boxing News. “I’ve got my eye on the Southern Area and English titles in the next few months so the likes of Darren Hamilton, who holds the Southern belt, would make for a good fight and boost my rankings. “This is without doubt the biggest year for me yet and I will be making headlines later in the year.” Evangelou’s last outing was November when he out-pointed Joel Ryan over four rounds and the Londoner will now look to take the next step

Haye: No desire to fight Chisora

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Hayemaker’ rules out British bout Two-weight world champion David Haye, speaking at an appearance on ‘That Sunday Night Show’ on UK TV, has ruled out any future fight with rival Dereck Chisora following the pair’s brawl in Munich last week. The 31 year-old, who retired from professional boxing last October, had been linked to a multi-million pound clash against the former British and Commonwealth champion after the pair went toe-to-toe at the Klitschko v Chisora post-fight press conference, but has now moved to rule out the fight. "I've got no desire to fight Dereck Chisora inside the ring or outside the ring. He's lost his last three fights,” stated Haye to host Adrian Chiles. "If I could rewind time, of course I wouldn't go down there (to Munich). But you can't rewind time." Haye also commented on the brawl by saying: "He comes over to me, in my face, I feel his knuckles in my face, what am I supp

Hearn: Chisora fight won’t happen, Haye is a PR disaster!

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Matchroom promoter says no interest in all-British clash Eddie Hearn says Daivd Haye should have never stepped foot in Munich as the former two-weight world champion caused controversy by firstly, calling out Vitali Kklitschko and then publicly scuffled with former British title holder Dereck Chisora. The Matchroom Sport supremo, who looks after the interests of the likes Kell Brook, Darren Barker and Carl Froch, is of the belief that a heavyweight super-fight between the two Brits would not be sufficient enough to bring the ‘Hayemaker’ out of retirement. “I’m not sure Haye will want a media run-up and fight with Dereck Chisora,” Hearn told The Daily Star on Sunday. “The only way he would come out of retirement is for millions of pounds and there’s no demand for a fight with Chisora that is going to generate that sort of money. “Perhaps Vitali might fight David but I’m not sure that will generate the sort of money he is used to now. “David should

Cleverly: Karpency the hardest puncher I have fought

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Welshman defends opponent in shutout win Nathan Cleverly came through his third world title defence with relative ease tonight, taking a landslide points win over American Tommy Karpency and immediately defended the choice of opponent for the Cardiff bout. The Cefn Forest man jumped to champion the challenger in the wake of scepticism over the fighter ranked number eleven by the WBO and stated in a TV interview after the fight that the southpaw hits deceptively hard. “It was a good workout. Tommy is very tough,” Cleverly told BoxNation’s John Rawling after the fight. “In all fairness, a lot of people have been criticizing Tommy Karpency coming into the fight and been very cynical saying he shouldn’t be in the ring with me. “Let me tell you that out of everybody I have fought, he has hit the hardest out of all the light-heavyweights I have fought. I have fought some big punchers and he hits harder than them!” Cleverly, 25, improved his

Cleverly predictably dominates Karpency

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor Welshman makes another defence WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly made the third successful defence of his title against an out-of-depth Tommy Karpency in his first fight on Welsh soil for over four years. The 25 year-old won every round of the one-sided bout in front of an adoring crowd at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff in what was more like a twelve round spar rather than a world title fight. Karpency, 26, never made any impression on the Cefn Forest fighter as he trotted backwards for the duration of the fight, trying to avoid any damaging punches from Cleverly and succeeded in his quest as he fell to a 120-108 defeat on all three cards. Cleverly may now be in line for a huge unification fight in the US after addressing the Wales crowd post-fight and hinting that America maybe his next destination as he attempts to lure another of the world champions into a contest.

Povetkin retains in tight battle with Huck

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Russian clings on to WBA title Alexander Povetkin retained his WBA heavyweight title in a gruelling battle with WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck at the Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart Germany this evening. The 32 year-old, who improved his record to 24-0 with the win, looked to be blowing hard from round six but consistently found the target with his jab and at the end of the fight, Huck looked worse for wear. On my card, I had Huck taking the fight 116-113 as Povetkin laboured through the second half of the fight, but the judges obviously thought that the Russian did enough to keep his title with a majority verdict. Both fighters’ threw their all into the fight in what was one of the most entertaining heavyweight contests in recent times and with scores of 114-114, 116-113 and 116-112 , Povetkin made a successful second defence. Huck, 27, has enhanced his reputation was a game performance and may now decide to stay at the higher limit

Robert Guerrero set for welterweight bow

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Aydin test for ‘The Ghost’ Three-weight world champion Robert Guerrero will make his welterweight debut on July 28 th against WBC silver welterweight champion Selcuk Aydin for the chance to become mandatory challenger to belt holder Floyd Mayweather. The 28 year-old, who has been out of the ring almost a year with injury, had hoped to meet Mayweather on his May 5 th date at the MGM Grand but has now seemingly settled for the opportunity to force the five-weight world title holder’s hand. Aydin, also 28, is undefeated in 23 contests so far and has been waiting since July 2009 for his chance to fight for the full WBC title after winning an eliminator that never transpired to bring him his shot. The match-up has been slated to take place in San Jose, California at the HP Pavillion, with broadcasters Showtime picking up the rights to the fight and more support will be added soon.

Winky Wright misses out on Mayweather undercard

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Former champion overlooked for Quillin Ronald ‘Winky’ Wright will not fight Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin on the huge Cinco de Mayo card at the MGM Grand topped by Floyd Mayweather’s WBA light-middleweight title bout against Miguel Cotto. Wright, 40,  was widely rumoured to be Quillin’s next foe for the date but revealed yesterday that he was contacted about the possible bout before being ruled out as the 28 year-old’s 27th professional opponent. Quillin has an unblemished record since entering the paid ranks in 2005 and had been bantering with the former undisputed world champion via Twitter for the past few days about their slated meeting. The Grand Rapids-born fighter is said to be close to a world title shot at the middleweight limit and will no doubt be looking for an impressive victory over a ranked fighter, to take him into a possible shot at the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or Sergio Martinez later in the year.

‘Twitter King’ Malignaggi rules out Tweeting during world title fight

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor ‘Magic Man’ compelled to backtrack on promise to followers Former light-welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi has been forced to cancel plans to tweet during his next fight as the American is now pencilled in to fight for a world title on April 29 in Ukraine. The 31 year-old, who has fought some of the world’s top fighters in his ten-year career, had promised his 20,000+ followers on the social networking site that he would send a Tweet during his next bout, only to admit defeat in his tongue-in-cheek quest as he fights the unbeaten Vyacheslav Senchenko for the WBA welterweight belt. “I promised my fans I would tweet during my next fight. Not sure I am going to do that. This fight is serious. I gotta be focused,” stated Malignaggi via his usual method. The New Yorker then jokingly added: “Not only is this fight serious, but also the Ukraine doesn't have my 4g network. My tweet game would be slow,” he laughed. Senchenko, 34, is undef

Leonard Ellerbe: Manny Pacquiao is lying

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Mayweather advisor wades in on offer claims Floyd Mayweather’s right hand man Leonard Ellerbe has disputed recent claims by Manny Pacquiao that the WBC welterweight champion offered him $40 million dollars with no PPV and that the Filipino told Mayweather he wanted a 50-50 deal. “Pacquiao is lying,” Ellerbe said bluntly to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports recently. “What Manny Pacquiao has to understand, and I don’t think he understands this part, is that if the fight ever comes off, he’ll never make the kind of money that Floyd makes. That’s simply because of the structure of his terrible deal with his promoter. “[Pacquiao] is a guy who doesn’t know what he makes fight to fight. He has no idea of where the revenue comes from. There’s no way he’s going to come up with something like that [offer] off the top of his dome.” All manner of reasons have kept the two fighters apart for this long, what with blood testing, venues, dates, prison sentences an

Pacquiao: Mayweather talks, but needs to accept 50-50

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor WBO champion still hopes to salvage super-fight Manny Pacquiao remains hopeful in his desire to nail down Floyd Mayweather for a multi-million dollar super-fight in 2012 and has explained that his only request is a fair 50/50 split of the money generated. The 33 year-old eight-weight champion has been involved in a war of words with the WBC welterweight belt holder as both sides blame the other for the failure to secure the prospective ‘fight of a generation’ and Pacquiao is hoping to agree the fight after his next defence against Timothy Bradley. ‘Pacman’ has accused Mayweather of putting out certain statements in the media, only to negotiate the opposite behind closed doors and wants clarification that the American is willing to begin talks on a level playing field. “He talks, he says all this, but you know what: He doesn’t want the fight,” Pacquiao told Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports . “I want the fight. I’m the one who has wanted this fight all alo

Dereck Chisora official statement on Munich brawl

Following the extensive media coverage that my WBC World Heavyweight title challenge against Vitali Klitschko in Munich at the weekend has attracted, I feel I must wholeheartedly apologise for my part in the regretable scenes both before and after what was to be the biggest night of my career. Whilst my behaviour was inexcusable, there were many things that went on behind the scenes that ultimately caused my frustrations to boil over, however this is of course no excuse.  I cannot go into the specific details at the moment as quite rightly the British Boxing Board of Control will be investigating this matter and also the altercation that took place between David Haye and myself where I was struck by a bottle. Despite all of this, the bottom line is, I have let my family, my team and worst of all the sport I love down. I acknowledge that my actions were totally unprofessional, with or without provocation. Now, with a cool head and the benefit of hindsight, my actions at the weeke

David Haye official Statement (Re: Munich)

David Haye It is with regret that I feel I have to issue this statement to clarify certain matters, following an unfortunate incident that occurred on Saturday night (February 18) in Munich, Germany at the Vitali Klitschko vs. Dereck Chisora post-fight press conference. I was in Munich to watch the WBC world heavyweight title bout between Klitschko and Chisora and provide punditry for BoxNation, and accredited as such. During the post-fight press conference, I was stood at the back of the room. It wasn't until Bernd Boente said my name and involved me in the press conference that I commented. I was then happy to banter back and forth with Boente and Klitschko, keen to ascertain whether he (Vitali) would stay true to his word and reiterate his desire to do what his younger brother couldn't do - knock me out. I felt as though the public would want to hear more information about this potential bout and that we could both start beating the drum ahead of a showdown l

Wladimir: Chisora behaviour won't be tolerated

Wladimir Klitschko Dear friends, I am shocked and deeply embarrassed by the actions of Dereck Chisora and his team over this past week. It saddens me how he represented the sport of boxing and disrespected the champion of the world Vitali Klitschko at the weigh-in and fight night.  But even more embarrassing and disgraceful to the sport was the post fight press conference.  With journalists from all over the world in attendance, this same man Dereck Chisora, got into a fight with Adam Booth, the trainer of David Haye, and David Haye himself. Dereck then promised out loudly multiple times right in front of the press to "personally SHOOT AND KILL David Haye!!!"  For all of the great Champions from the past that have been polishing the image of the sport of boxing and giving it the glamour, respect and recognition while setting a good example for the youth of the world to follow, this type of behavior kills all that hard work from the former champs and teaches disres

Chisora and Haye stand to make millions from fracas

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Brawl increases interest in British battle The late-night punch-up between British heavyweights Dereck Chisora and David Haye in Munich on Saturday night is set to make both fighters millions if they decide to meet in the ring pending any punishments dished out. The British Boxing Board of Control have issued a statement today which indicates possible sanctions will be handed out to 28 year-old Chisora, who instigated the mass brawl at the weekend after first slapping, and then losing to Vitali Klitschko for the world heavyweight title. Speculation is rife that a life-time ban will be laid on the Londoner but in my opinion this won’t happen and once ‘Del Boy’ serves whatever ban/fine that comes his way, the former British champion stands to benefit royally from his actions in Germany. Haye, 31, is still wanted for questioning by police, although his whereabouts are currently unknown and the WBA champion may have to deal with the Munich const

Carl Froch admits holding up opponents

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Former world champion makes bet admission Super-Six super-middleweight finalist Carl Froch has openly admitted to ‘prolonging’ some of his fights so that his friends and family could make money from round betting. The 34 year-old told how he could have knocked out and opponent in the fourth round of a bout, but allowed him to carry on so people he knew could make money. The Nottingham fighter may now face repercussions for his statement made to the BBC and the British Board of Boxing Control are sure to get involved in the matter. "I've done it more than one occasion and it was round five but that's not illegal,” Froch explained to BBC Sport. "I can say, 'right, I'll stop this kid in round five'. If I'm good enough to do that then fair enough. I don't gamble but my brothers and my friends, they did quite well off it. "I can openly say that because if I'm good enough to step on the gas in rou

Chisora questioned by German police, Haye missing

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor Munich officers detain British fighter for threats Heavyweight contender Dereck Chisora has been arrested by German police officers after threatening to ‘shoot’ and ‘burn’ fellow British boxer David Haye at the post-fight press conferece for his defeat to Vitali Klitschko. The 28 year-old confronted Haye as he gatecrashed his Munich wrap-up with journalists, with the resulting brawl turning nasty with bottles and a tripod being used by Haye as members of Chisora’s entourage walked him down. Chisora then threatened to shoot the ‘Hayemaker’ after he left the press conference and argued to the former WBA heavyweight champion’s manager Adam Booth that the two should meet ‘inside’ or ‘outside’ of the ring or he will ‘find him and burn him.’ Munich police have now been brought in and detained Chisora at 10:30am German time for questioning about the incident, but are still unable to locate Haye after searching the hotel where he was staying  and th

Boxing gets ugly as Chisora and Haye clash

Phil D. Jay  WBN Editor British fighter’s engage in German Brawl Accusations flew around in the aftermath of an astonishing brawl between British fighter’s Dereck Chisora and David Haye at a German post-fight press conference when the two failed to control themselves in front of the world’s media. Chisora, 28, had just gone twelve rounds with one of the best heavyweights of recent times in Vitali Klitschko and obviously his adrenaline was pumped. The sight of Haye in the room sent the Finchley fighter over the edge though and Chisora was eventually questioned by police for threatening to shoot his compatriot. ‘Del Boy’ has been emphasising his hatred for Haye for sometime now and whether it was a good idea to allow Haye into the post-fight press conference is a debate for another time as the damage is done. Haye, a former WBA champion, had made his presence felt in an attempt to call out Vitali Klitschko for a June match-up that had been discussed in December, but
